Austria: Waldviertel to third place, Aich/Dob fourth. Amstetten secure last ticket for playoffs!
2 min read
Now is official that Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel ended the Powerfusion VL regular season in third place behind defending champions HYPO TIROL volleyball team and TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg. However, the Northmen had to fight hard at the start of the last round on the field of VBK Wörther-See-Löwen Klagenfurt, winning after only at tie break, 2-3 (25:17, 25:27, 25:21, 20:25, 13:15)!
Klagenfurt will fight in the relegation together with last-placed VBC TLC Weiz, who suffered a defeat on the field of SK Zadruga Aich/Dob. Even before the game began, it was clear that the Lower Carinthians could no longer move up to third place. After a 3-1 (24:26, 25:18, 25:18, 25:14) win, Aich/Dob ended the regular season with 36 points like Waldviertel, but with one win less.
Only three points would have helped Klagenfurt in the fight for the last quarter-final ticket and, after the fourth set played today against Waldviertel, it was clear that the last playoff place would go to VCA Amstetten NÖ, despite their 1-3 (27:29, 11:25, 25:23, 23:25) home defeat against UVC McDonald’s Ried. Their away win means sixth place, as they can no longer be overtaken by TJ Sokol V/Post SV Wien, who played their last game on Sunday.
Based on the results on Saturday, the quarter-final pairings have now been determined: HYPO TIROL will face Amstetten, Hartberg will play against Sokol, Waldviertel against Ried and Aich/Dob has to play with UVC Holding Graz.
The “Best-of-3” series starts next weekend.
Before the decisive championship phase begins, the irrilevant big match between Hartberg and HYPO TIROL and the duel between Graz and Sokol will close the regular season on Sunday. Both games will start at 4 p.m.
