Champions League: Italian sides win first leg of Quarterfinals!

Quarterfinals of 2023/24 CEV Champions League started today with first three games of first leg, in which all three Italian sides celebrated victories.
Away win for Italian powerhouse Cucine Lube Civitanova, who won in Turkey, on the field of Halkbank Ankara with the score of 1-3 (21:25, 21:25, 27:25, 22:25), despite a stellar performance of bomber Nimir Abdel Aziz, who left the court with 27 points including 2 winning blocks and 4 aces (21/42 in attack through 50%, blocked 4 times and 2 errors).
In a very balanced game, looking at numbers, the winners had 4 players in double digit: 17 points each for Marlon Yant (5 only in decisive four set) and Aleksandar Nikolov, 15 for Adis Lagumdzija and 10 for Barthlemy Chinenyeze.
Among tue hosts, in addition to Nimir, double digit also for Earvin Ngapeth who scored 12 points including 1 block and 1 ace, but with only 43% in attack (10/23, blocked once and 3 errors).
All easy for Itas Trentino, who showed their dominance by sweeping Berlin Recycling Volleys 0-3 (18:25, 17:25, 17:25). The Italian side’s skillful play, highlighted by Daniele Lavia’s 21 points (including 4 aces, 1 block and 67% in attack) and Alessandro Michieletto’s 19 points (with 1 ace, 2 blocks and 70% in attack), left the German team with no response, setting the stage for their advance to the semi-finals. No players among the hosts reached a double digit.
The evening concluded with a thrilling five-set match between Gas Sales Daiko Piacenza and Plusliga’s leaders Jastrzębski Węgiel, ending in a 3-2 (19:25, 30:28, 25:16, 22:25, 15:11) very nervous victory for the hosts, led in score by a great Ricardo Lucarelli, top scorer and MVP of the match with 24 points, including 2 aces, 1 block and 57%
in attack, contributing significantly to the team’s comeback after losing the first set. Double digit also for Yoandy Leal and Robertlandy Simon who added 17 and 10 points, respectively, while Jean Patry was the most prolific player on the other side of the net.
Tomorrow Spain’s Guaguas Las Palmas will face Turkey’s Ziraat Bankkart Ankara in the game that will close First Leg of quarterfinals.
