Poland: Wilfredo Leon makes his debut for Bogdanka LUK Lublin (and secures his team’s 2024/25 second victory)

Round 2 of 2024/25 Plusliga started today with a big news for all volleyball fans, as Wilfredo Leon played his highly anticipated debut for Bogdanka LUK Lublin!
And his team also earned their second tie break win of the season after the one on the field of Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie in first Round.
In a thrilling, back-and-forth encounter, Lublin emerged victorious over Trefl Gdańsk with the score of 3-2 (23:25, 25:23, 25:19, 23:25, 15:10).
Even if the match drew attention due to Leon’s debut, one of the league’s biggest new stars, did not disappointing, contributing with 7 points through 50% in attack and 2 winning blocks to his team’s overall effort, the winners played a very good game above all in blocking, scoring 15 points from this element compared to the rivals’ 6, while brazilian libero Thales Hoss was named MVP of the game with 65% positive reception (26% perfect) and a series of spectacular defenses.
Bennie Tuistra scored 17 points for Lublin, well supported by Mateusz Malinowski who added 14 as well as by Fynnian McCarthy (13 points including 3 winning blocks and 71% in attack), and Aleks Grozdanov, also in double digit with 11 points to his name through 70% in attack and 4 winning blocks.
Nothing to do for Gdańsk who, despite 12 aces and 20 and 19 points respectively from top scorers Piotr Orczyk and Jakub Jarosz, were not able to win the game after another tie break defeat in first round on the field of Cuprum Stilon Gorzów (former Cuprum Lubin) last Saturday.
Round 2 will continue tomorrow, on Saturday, with other two games: defending champions Jastrzębski Węgiel will welcome Asseco Resovia Rzeszów in a big classic of Polish volleyball while, in the evening, Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie will face Barkom Każany Lwów.
