In a major transition for USA Volleyball, legendary player and now coach Karch Kiraly has been named head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
He officially takes over the role following John Speraw, who recently assumed the position of USA Volleyball’s president and CEO after serving as the men’s team head coach for 12 years.
The former expert expressed full confidence in Kiraly, praising his dedication and coaching skills.
“Team USA’s greatest winner is now leading the U.S. Men into LA 2028,” he said. “Karch’s tireless work ethic and brilliant intellect make him the perfect leader for this next chapter.”
Kiraly, a volleyball legend, steps into this role after leading the U.S. Women’s National Team since 2012. Under his leadership, they earned Olympic silver in Paris 2024, Olympic gold in Tokyo 2021 (their first-ever), and bronze in Rio 2016. He also guided them to a World Championship win in 2014.
Reflecting on his transition, Karch Kiraly himself said, “For a quarter of my life, I’ve devoted myself to the U.S. Women’s Team. Now, I’m excited for new challenges and to help the U.S. Men’s Team achieve great success.”
Kiraly, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest volleyball players of all time, will take over a men’s team that secured bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics and is ranked third globally.
His career as a player includes three Olympic gold medals (two in indoor volleyball and one in beach volleyball) and numerous other successes, including being named the greatest volleyball player of the 20th century by the FIVB.
