Austria: HYPO TIROL, Hartberg, Aich/Dob and Graz take the 2-0 lead in their quarterfinals series!

Four teams took another step towards 2024/25 Powerfusion VL Men semifinals on Wednesday evening, with all best-of-five quarterfinal series at 2-0: Defending champions HYPO TIROL volleyball team, last-season runners up TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg, SK Zadruga Aich/Dob and UVC Holding Graz, the only team who celebrated a home win today!
Defending champions and regular season absolute leaders HYPO TIROL volleyball team celebrated a 0-3 (23:25, 12:25, 16:25) win on the field of No.8 TJ Sokol V/Post SV Wien, before retiring from professional volleyball at the end of the season. In any case, Captain Niklas Kronthaler and his teammates are highly motivated to keep the quarter-final series as short as possible, and today they needed only 70 minutes to score their 20th victory (17th in straight sets) in their 20th league game, losing only three sets.
“We were able to play a good game in first set, but I can just tell that HYPO TIROL is a Champions League team. And if they want to, they will win!“, said Sokol’s captain Florian Weikert
The 2024 runners-up and second in regular season TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg, down No.7 VCA Amstetten NĂ also in straight sets, 0-3 (24:26, 18:25, 18:25) while, in a full-packed venue in Zwettl, No.3 SK Zadruga Aich/Dob also took the second step towards the semifinals after a very difficult 2-3 (25:18, 22:25, 18:25, 25:20, 11:15) win against No.6 Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel.
Sports director Martin Micheu said: “It was the difficult game we expected. Waldviertel had a great start this time too, but after a change we were able to fight back. In the end it was a top performance.”
After the disappointment on Sunday, No.4 in regular season UVC McDonald’s Ried had high hopes for Game 2 against UVC Holding Graz. However, the hosts again proved to be better, also in their Raiffeisen Sportpark, even turning a 20:24 into a 26:24 in the third set!
Ried is therefore the only top 4 team in the preliminary round under pressure this weekend.
Only with a home win will the chance of reaching the semi-finals remain alive.
