Austria: all results of the weekend – Hypo Tirol won Game 1 of final! 7th Place for Sokol, 5th for Ried

4 min read

Final series of 2024/25 Powerfusion VL started today with HYPO TIROL volleyball team who delivered another convincing performance in Game 1 of best-of-seven series against TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg.
The defending champions gave their rivals no chance in front of their home fans at USI Hall, defeating them with a clean 3-0 (25:14, 25:22, 25:17), aiming for their 13th title, their third in a row.
This season, they have only lost in CEV Champions League group stage!
However, the conclusion of the final series closes a very successful chapter in Austrian volleyball: as General Manager Hannes Kronthaler announced several weeks ago, the HYPO TIROL volleyball team will say goodbye to Austria’s top league.
Top scorers of the day were Niklas Kronthaler with 18 points and Kyle Hobus who added 11 for the winners, and Lukas Glatz (10) and Tobias Willimek (7) for the visiting side, but the Innsbruck side made the difference above all in blocking, scoring 14 points from this element compared to Hartberg’s 3.

I’m very satisfied with the performance. But the series is still long, and it continues on Wednesday. It will certainly be more difficult in Hartberg, but I’m confident. We want to win the championship in four games,” said HYPO TIROL captain Niklas Kronthaler.

Hartberg’s Lukas Glatz: “We definitely expected more. The Tyroleans played superbly, served very well, and made hardly any mistakes in attack. We also struggled against their blocking. We will recover, train, and on Wednesday, things will get heated in our arena.

Game 2 will take place on Wednesday in Hartberg.

In the first match for 3rd place, SK Zadruga Aich/Dob celebrated a 3-2 (25:22, 21:25, 25:22, 21:25, 15:13) home victory over UVC Holding Graz. “It was a very difficult game – also mentally after losing to Hartberg in the semifinals. Our two Cubans, Charles Santana and Camino Martinez, were also missing due to illness. The match was on a knife-edge, and we were ultimately the luckier ones,” said Aich/Dob Sports Director and coach Martin Micheu. The action continues on Easter Sunday in Graz.

UVC McDonald’s Ried finished the season in 5th place, defeating Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel 3-2 (21:25, 21:25, 25:18, 25:22, 16:14).
After winning in Zwettl in three sets, the match was already decided after the score was tied. For libero brothers Stephan and Hannes Langwieser and middle blocker Felix Breit, it was their last game at the Raiffeisen Volleydome, as they are ending their careers.

Seventh place was already awarded on Friday in the Johann Pölz Hall,
with VCA Amstetten NÖ who defeated TJ Sokol V/Post SV Wien 3-0 (25:20, 25:22, 25:14) at home after a 1-3 away loss. However, the Golden Set went to the visiting side from the country’s capital with a score of 15-13.

Amstetten played completely differently than in Wien, which surprised us. Now, of course, we are overjoyed to have won the Golden Set and finished the season in a respectable 7th place,” said Sokol captain Florian Weiker.

VCA Sports Director Michael Henschke was conciliatory given the significant improvement in performance compared to the first leg: “I wanted to see a good performance, and we dominated Sokol over three sets. It’s possible to narrowly lose a golden set. I wanted to see a different side of my team, and that’s what they showed. In the end, it doesn’t make much difference whether we finish the year in seventh or eighth place. Because the season hasn’t gone as planned.

In relegation round, VBK Kelag Wörther-See-Löwen Klagenfurt celebrated a 3-0 (25:15, 25:17, 25:16) home victory over VBC TLC Weiz on Saturday afternoon, ending a difficult season in second place, while Sportunion z+p St. Pölten won the Lower Austria derby against UNIONvolleys Bisamberg-Hollabrunn 3-2 (25:13, 25:17, 21:25, 22:25, 16:14), thus defending first place in their final match.
Bisamberg-Hollabrunn can appreciate the defeat, having finished third and secured their promotion ticket!
Tie break win also for hotVolleys Wien on the field of HIB Volley Graz, 2-3 (25:22, 25:23, 17:25, 23:25, 12:15).
