So far, with the start of Round 16, 2025 Men’s World Championship in the Philippines has proven that volleyball’s global landscape is changing.
Although traditional volleyball giants such as Poland, Italy, and the USA continue to display their trademark quality despite more or less roster’s changes, several new teams are beginning to write their name on the international stage.
In fact, the first phase of the tournament also delivered major shocks, with powerhouses like France, Brazil, and Japan bowed out earlier than expected, leaving space for surprising breakthroughs as Finland, Czech Republic, Türkiye, Portugal and Belgium, while the host nation, the Philippines, celebrated a historic victory to be very close to advancing, falling just one point short in a narrow 2–3 defeat to Iran, one of Asia’s strongest teams.
In addition, not all most-quoted sides impressed. Germany disappointed, and Egypt, long considered Africa’s leading team, fell short of expectations. Meanwhile, Tunisia offered a collection of good actions, slowly rebuilding its position in world of volleyball.
Canada maintained consistency, together with Slovenia, Iran, and the Netherlands.
And, among these twists, one reality remains, as Europe still leads the way: out of 16 teams advancing to the knockout stage, 11 come from Europe.
Elsewhere, Asia is steadily climbing. With Ramon Suzara now at the helm of the Asian Volleyball Confederation, there is a promising scenario for faster development.
Meanwhile, in South America, familiar names remain at the forefront, with Argentina and Brazil continue to represent the region, even if Brazil’s performance fell below expectations, although their elimination was decided by just a single set in a pool where they managed two wins and one loss, and the defeat coming at the hands of Serbia, in last day of Pool Stage.
In first Game of Round of 16 in Pasay City, Türkiye stun Netherlands to reach historic World Championship quarterfinal for the first time ever.
After dropping a nail-biting first set 27-29, they roared back to take the next three 25:23, 25:19 and 25-19 and seal a well-deserved 3-1 victory.
Adis Lagumdzija led the charge with 28 points, while outside hitter Efe Mandıracı also contributed with three aces in the fourth set and left the court with 15 points. Mirza Lagumdzija added 13, and middle blocker Bedirhan Bülbül also contributed with 12.
On the other side of the net, Michiel Ahyi scored 21 points and Tom Koops added 14, but it wasn’t enough to stop the rivals’ momentum.
Türkiye now will face Poland, who down Canada by 3-1 (25:18, 23:25, 25:20, 25:14), in their first-ever World Championship quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Poland booked their spot in the last eight of the competition in a victory that marked their fourth straight win under coach Nikola Grbić, keeping their Gold medal ambitions alive.
The match saw Poland start strong, with a lack in concentration in the second set, but quickly regroup to dominate the remainder two.
Kamil Semeniuk led the charge with 18 points, closely followed by Bartosz Kurek who added 15 and Wilfredo Leon who also contributed with 14. Canada’s Sharone Vernon-Evans stood out again with 23 points, while Jackson Young contributed 12, but they were not enough to compete against a very strong rival.
Major difference in fact came from errors, with Canada who collected 35 points only through mistakes, compared to just 16 from Poland.
Tomorrow other two clashes: Argentina, leaders of Pool C, will face second-placed in Pool F Italy while, in the evening (local time), Belgium will face Finland in a duel between two of major upsets in the tournament.
