What a match!
The USA is heading to the VNL Championship: in an absolute five-set thriller, they took down Japan in the Semifinals, snapping their incredible 14-0 undefeated streak: 2-3 (19:25, 25:23, 25:20, 19:25, 13:15).
The grit, the resilience, the pure energy, this team left everything on the court to secure their spot in the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Nations League men’s final.
Karch Kiraly’s side recovered from a 2-1 deficit to hand Japan their first defeat of the tournament, ending an extraordinary run of 14 consecutive victories.
After finishing fifth in the preliminary standings, the Americans will now face defending champions Poland in Sunday’s gold medal match. It will be the fourth VNL final for the United States, who previously finished runners-up in 2019, 2022 and 2023, while Poland will be chasing a third Nations League title after lifting the trophy in 2023 and 2025. Japan and Slovenia, meanwhile, will meet in the bronze medal match.
Japan looked sharp in the opening stages, leading 14-12 in the first set before the momentum shifted dramatically. The United States raised the pressure from the service line and tightened up their blocking, turning the set around with a dominant finish to take it 25-19.
Laurent Tillie’s squad responded impressively in the second set. With more efficient attacking and outstanding work in transition, Japan leveled the match 25-23 before carrying that confidence into the third set.
The Asians raced to a 5-1 lead, and although the Americans quickly erased the deficit behind Jake Hanes’ serving, Japan remained composed. Led by the consistency of Yuji Nishida, they controlled the key moments to secure the set 25-20 and move within one set of the final.
The match, however, changed completely in the fourth. The American serve began to disrupt Japan’s normally reliable reception, while the block neutralized several of the hosts’ attacking options.
Hanes took over offensively with seven points in the set, including two aces, while veteran Matt Anderson added six more as the United States forced a deciding fifth set.
The tie-break delivered the drama expected from a semifinal of this caliber: the Americans opened up a 7-3 advantage, only for Japan to fight all the way back and edge ahead 12-11. Kiraly’s decisive move came from the bench, sending Ethan Champlin to the service line. The substitute immediately delivered a crucial ace to put the United States back in front at 13-12, swinging the momentum once again before the Americans closed out the match 15-13.
Jake Hanes finished as the match’s top scorer with 24 points to his name, while Anderson contributed 23 in another outstanding performance from the experienced outside hitter.
For Japan, Yuji Nishida scored 19 points, with captain Yuki Ishikawa adding 18.
Statistically, the match reflected just how fine the margins were. Japan once again displayed excellent defensive organization and ball control, but the United States made the difference with their physicality at the net and aggressive serving, particularly in the final two sets. After struggling to contain Japan’s fast-paced offense early on, the Americans gradually established control through their block-defense system, allowing them to complete one of the tournament’s most impressive comebacks.
Sunday’s final will now feature two of the world’s volleyball powerhouses, as the United States and Poland battle for the 2026 Volleyball Nations League title. For the Americans, it is an opportunity to finally lift the VNL trophy after three previous silver medals; for Poland, it is another chance to confirm their status as the dominant force in international men’s volleyball.
“They are a really good team. They play all aspects of the game really well. So, we just had to be a tiny bit better in certain situations, and that’s what we did,” Anderson said after the match. “Now we’ve got to get back and get some sleep, because it’s hard to come back tomorrow. Poland have a lot of power and a lot of guys that can come off the bench and keep maintaining that level. So, we have to stay at our consistent level the entire match from point zero to point 25.”
“It was a great match, I think. First of all, congrats to the US team! We played well, but didn’t get a good result,” Yuki Ishikawa commented. “Now we have another match to get a good result tomorrow. We have to clear our minds, and we have to prepare for the match and play better.”
The bronze medal match between Slovenia and Japan on Sunday will start at 15:40 local time (07:40 UTC) and the final showdown between Poland and USA is scheduled at 19:30 (11:30).
