The 2026 Men’s Volleyball Nations League is down to its final day, with two matches left to decide this year’s medalists.
Sunday at the Ningbo Beilun Sports and Arts Centre in China will begin with the bronze medal match between Japan and Slovenia before attention turns to the highly anticipated championship clash between defending champions Poland and the United States, renewing one of the tournament’s most compelling rivalries.

The gold medal match, scheduled for 19:30 local time (11:30 UTC), will see Poland attempt to defend the title they captured in 2025 against a United States side chasing its first-ever Volleyball Nations League crown.
The Americans enjoyed another impressive campaign, finishing fifth in the preliminary standings with an 8-4 record and 25 points before producing two outstanding performances in the Finals. Their quarterfinal victory came in dominant fashion, sweeping reigning world champions Italy 3-0 (25:22, 25:21, 25:21).
They followed that performance by ending Japan’s unbeaten run in a dramatic five-set semifinal, prevailing 3-2 (25:19, 23:25, 20:25, 25:19, 15:13) to reach their fourth VNL final.
Despite consistently being among the world’s elite, the United States have yet to lift the VNL trophy.
Their previous appearances in the final ended with silver medals in 2019, 2022 and 2023, while they also claimed bronze in the inaugural 2018 edition. After missing last year’s Finals and finishing 12th overall, the Americans have returned in style, and Saturday’s victory also moved them up two places in the FIVB World Ranking, climbing from sixth to fourth ahead of both Slovenia and Japan. Their most recent podium finish at a major international tournament came with the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Standing in their way is the competition’s most consistent force. Nikola Grbić’s team finished second in the preliminary phase with a 10-2 record and 29 points before eliminating Ukraine in four sets (25:22, 22:25, 25:20, 25:17) in the quarterfinals.
Their semifinal performance was arguably their most convincing of the tournament, dismantling Slovenia 3-0 (25:16, 25:19, 25:17) to secure another appearance in the championship match.
Poland also arrive in Ningbo as Olympic silver medalists and bronze medalists from the most recent FIVB World Championship.

History slightly favors the European powerhouse. The two teams have faced each other 51 times in major international competitions, with Poland leading the overall series 29 victories to 22. Even more significant is their recent dominance, as Poland have won each of the last five meetings, beginning with the VNL 2023 final.
That streak also includes their thrilling five-set victory in the Paris 2024 Olympic semifinals and their convincing 3-0 (25:20, 25:21, 25:19) success during this year’s VNL preliminary phase in Chicago on July 19. In Volleyball Nations League history alone, Poland lead the head-to-head record 7-4.

Japan arrived in Ningbo as the only undefeated team in the competition after an outstanding preliminary phase, where they won all 12 matches and finished first with 30 points.
Their momentum continued in the quarterfinals, overcoming hosts China with a four-set comeback victory (23:25, 25:23, 25:16, 25:23).
However, their perfect season ended in Saturday’s dramatic semifinal defeat to the United States.
The Japanese are aiming to collect their third VNL medal after winning bronze in 2023 and silver in 2024.
Last season, their campaign ended in the quarterfinals after being eliminated by eventual champions Poland.
For Slovenia, Sunday represents another opportunity to finally make history.
The European side will play for bronze for the fourth time—and for the third consecutive edition—but has never managed to step onto the VNL podium, finishing fourth on each previous occasion. Slovenia concluded the preliminary phase in third place with a 10-2 record and 26 points before surviving one of the most remarkable matches in VNL history, defeating Türkiye in straight sets despite an unforgettable second and third set, 25:21, 35:33, 39:37.
Their impressive run ended against Poland in the semifinals, where they were beaten in three sets.
Japan have enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings between the two nations. They lead the overall head-to-head series 8-3 and have won each of the last seven encounters, including a four-set comeback victory (25:27, 25:16, 25:22, 25:22) during this year’s preliminary phase in China on June 14.
The two teams have met seven times in the Volleyball Nations League, with Slovenia’s only victory coming in their very first meeting back in 2021—the last time they defeated Japan in any international competition.
