Denmark launches ambitious talent pathway to build the next generation ahead of EuroVolley

Fresh off a third-place finish in the 2026 CEV European League, Denmark’s men’s national team is preparing for its second consecutive appearance at the CEV EuroVolley, set to begin in early September. At the same time, Danish volleyball is taking a significant step toward the future with the launch of a new talent development programme created through an unprecedented partnership between Volleyball Danmark and the ISI Sports College.

For the first time in the country’s history, a Danish sports college will work directly with the national federation to provide a structured environment for the development of young players and coaches. Open to both girls and boys in indoor and beach volleyball, the programme will combine athletic training with education while placing equal emphasis on physical and mental development.

“Danish clubs are doing an extremely good job these years. In this new partnership with the school ISI, we are providing better opportunities for our youth national teams to develop, as they can now attend camps lasting from three to 14 days where they can train, sleep, live, eat and socialise together,” said Sebastian Mikelsons, Sports Director at Volleyball Danmark, describing what he sees as a major milestone for the sport in Denmark.

“With the federation’s limited resources, we have not always been able to offer our youth national teams training camps like that. Now the new Talent Team, called ‘Middle and North Jutland’, competing in the 2nd Division North, can become a new pathway in our talent development system. This team will not only be for athletes from ISI but will also be open to talented players from across the region. However, all training sessions and matches will take place at ISI.”

The initiative gives student-athletes access to high-quality training facilities, accommodation and catering, allowing them to spend extended periods together in a professional environment while creating new opportunities to progress into Denmark’s youth national teams.

“This is not just a one-off initiative. It is a complete development platform. We are creating better environments for our youth national teams, launching a new talent programme with competitive match opportunities, and strengthening coach education by making high-quality courses more accessible. Sustainable success is built through partnerships, and I believe this collaboration can become a model for how volleyball is developed in Denmark.”

The programme has been established for the 2026-2027 season and reflects the federation’s long-term vision. Following the senior men’s encouraging European League campaign, the new pathway is expected to help sustain Denmark’s recent progress and strengthen its future competitiveness.

“In five years, I hope we have more players competing at an international level, more qualified coaches across the country, and stronger cooperation between clubs, schools and the federation. Looking ten years ahead, the ambition is to establish Denmark as a nation that consistently develops talented players and regularly qualifies for major international championships. That requires patience and long-term thinking, but creating better daily training environments is one of the most important steps towards that goal,” Mikelsons explained.

With EuroVolley just around the corner, Denmark will now have the chance to measure its progress against some of Europe’s strongest teams. After qualifying for the continental championship for the second straight edition, expectations are growing around a squad eager to continue its upward trajectory.

“If we can play at our best level, I believe we can surprise a few teams and win some matches, which will hopefully take us to the knockout phase. We want to compete in every match, challenge our opponents, and show that Denmark belongs on this stage. Beyond the results, EuroVolley is also an important milestone in the long-term development of Danish volleyball. It gives our players invaluable experience, raises the visibility of the sport back home, and shows young athletes that it is possible to reach the highest international level,” Mikelsons concluded.

Denmark will begin its EuroVolley campaign in Pool C in Tampere, where it will take on hosts Finland, Serbia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Estonia. With the top four teams progressing to the knockout stage, the Danes will be aiming to build on their European League bronze medal and continue their recent rise on the continental stage.
