Welcome to the 68th episode of VolleyBar!
August 19 is WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY!
The click of the camera, a flash of light and here is moment in time captured forever.
Digitally or on film, the camera is never as important as the memory or moment caught. A group of friends, a sunset, or even your cat jumping on your bed, a photograph is a way to feel the emotion and context of that exact moment. Celebrate that, on this day!
Photography Day is a day whereby we pay tribute to the incredible art form that is photography.
There are those personal photos that we all love and share, but there are also photos that tell a story. They tell us about significant periods in time or enable us to learn more about the world. After all, they do say that a picture is worth one-thousand words, right?
The photograph originally was made by Nicéphore Niépce, using silver chloride coating a piece of paper. However, the photo would eventually turn fully dark as he knew no way to remove the silver chloride from the paper to preserve the photo.
Photographs got better and better over the years, first with the “still camera” and the ability to take a picture that way.
World Photography Day itself originates from the invention of the daguerreotype, a photographic processes developed by Louis Daguerre.
On January 9, 1839 The French Academy of Sciences announced the process and a few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift free to the world.
Thank you Louis Daguerre and thank you, France!
And, above all, all Volleytimes family wish a happy photography day also to our photographer who follows championships, as well as international events, without teleportation!

In Italy, 2026/27 season of Cisterna Volley has officially begun.
This morning, the team and coaching staff gathered at Ninfa Poliambulatorio Riabilitazione for their medical examinations and pre-season check-ups, carried out by the medical team led by Dr. Amedeo Verri.
The first tests were completed by new arrivals Vilmos Szabo, Giulio Magalini, Lorenzo Magliano, Filippo Federici and Francesco Pierri, alongside Tommaso Barotto, Filippo Lanza and Daniele Mazzone. The remaining players will join the group after completing their commitments with their respective national teams.
Head coach Daniele Morato said: “We are starting from a solid foundation. We have tried to raise the bar, and the new additions are exactly what we were looking for in terms of physical and technical qualities, as well as their willingness to work.”
In the afternoon, the team held its first training session at the PalaSport on Via delle Province.
Meanwhile, in Poland, middle blocker Jakub Strulak is entering the second year of his contract with PGE Projekt Warszawa.
Poland opened their 2026 FIVB Boys’ U17 Volleyball World Championship campaign in style, sweeping Argentina in straight sets (25:20, 26:24, 25:19).
The winners controlled the match from start to finish, holding their nerve in a tight second set before closing out the sweep!
Kevin Posłuszny emerged as the match’s top scorer with 13 points including 3 blocks and 1 ace.
A brilliant all-around performance from the middle blocker, contributing in attack, at the net and from the service line!
A perfect start for Poland!
Meanwhile Italy U17 opened their title defense with a confident straight-sets (26:24, 25:22, 25:21) victory over Romania.
Italy kept their composure in a tight opening set before taking control and closing out the match in three!
Federico Guiotto delivered a standout performance as the match’s top scorer with 18 points, 5 blocks and 1 ace.
Can Italy retain the U17 world title?
Also Iran secured their first victory with a dominant straight-sets win over Algeria, 25:15, 25:19, 25:14, while Venezuela sweeps host Qatar also 3-0 (25:16, 25:16, 25:23).
Türkiye starts strong in their campaign, sweeping Spain in a hard-fought battle, also ended in straight sets, 26:24, 26:24, 25:17.
The volleyball and sporting community is mourning the tragic passing of 22-year-old New Zealand volleyball player Kyla Te Wano Greensill, who passed away after a rapid illness caused by meningococcal disease.
Kyla proudly represented the Volley Ferns on the international stage, including at the AVC Nations Cup 2025 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Her family is sharing her story to raise awareness about how quickly meningococcal disease can progress and how its early symptoms can sometimes be difficult to recognize.
Our deepest condolences, thoughts and aroha go to Kyla’s whānau, friends, teammates and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Rest in peace, Kyla. You will be remembered!
