Second win for Germany in EuroVolley 2026 Pool D, first win for hosts Romania

Pool D continued to take shape in Cluj-Napoca on Friday, with Germany and Romania both adding important victories to their EuroVolley campaigns.

Germany followed up their impressive comeback against Türkiye with a convincing 3-0 victory over Latvia (25:20, 25:20, 25:16), while hosts Romania recovered from their opening defeat to Latvia by beating Switzerland 3-1 (25:21, 25:23, 13:25, 25:20).

For Germany, the straight-sets victory confirmed the strong start made on the opening day.
Massimo Botti’s team had already shown their ability to recover from a difficult situation against Türkiye, coming back from a set down to win 3-1. Against Latvia, however, there was no need for another comeback.
Germany controlled the match from the beginning, taking both of the opening sets by the same 25-20 score before producing their most convincing performance in the third.
Latvia, who had already made headlines on the opening day by defeating hosts Romania in a dramatic four-set battle, were unable to reproduce the same level of resistance against Germany. The Germans gradually tightened their grip on the match and eventually closed it out 25-16.
The result leaves Germany with two victories from two matches and in a strong position in a Pool D that already looks increasingly competitive. France also opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Switzerland, while Latvia had stunned Romania on the first night.
Anton Brehme led the winners with 11 points through 83% in attack and 1 block, while Moritz Reichert added 9.

The evening match brought a very different story.
Romania entered the court knowing that another defeat would have made their path through the pool considerably more complicated. After Latvia had spoiled their home opener on Wednesday, the hosts needed a response — and they found one against Switzerland.
Romania took the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23, putting themselves in control of the match. Switzerland, however, refused to surrender and produced a spectacular reaction in the third set.
The visitors completely turned the momentum around, winning 25-13 to force Romania to reset once again.
This time, the hosts did not allow the match to slip away. Romania regained control in the fourth set and eventually closed it 25-20, securing their first victory of the tournament.
The result gives Romania a valuable boost both in the standings and psychologically.
Their opening defeat against Latvia had been particularly painful after they led 21-19 in the first set and then lost the opener 26-24 before eventually falling 3-1.
For Switzerland, meanwhile, the defeat means they remain without a win after two matches.
They had already pushed France hard on Thursday, particularly in a second set that went all the way to 31-29, before losing 3-0.

With Germany now sitting on two victories and Romania finally off the mark, the battle for the four qualification places in Cluj is beginning to take shape.
And there is little room for anyone to relax: France and Germany have already established themselves among the early frontrunners, while Latvia’s opening victory over Romania showed that Switzerland and the hosts cannot afford to drop too many more points.

Pool D features France, Germany, Latvia, Romania, Switzerland and Türkiye, with the top four advancing to the knockout stage.
