USA retain NORCECA crown as Canada and Cuba book World Cup places

The United States remain the kings of NORCECA.

In front of a home crowd at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, the Americans successfully defended their continental title with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Canada, winning 25:19, 26:24, 25:27, 17:25, 15:13 in a final that changed direction several times before the United States finally prevailed.
The triumph was the USA’s 11th men’s NORCECA title and, perhaps more importantly, completed one of the two qualification missions attached to the tournament.
By finishing first, the United States secured one of the three NORCECA places available for the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup in Poland.
Canada, with silver, and Cuba, with bronze, claimed the other two. The same three nations occupied the podium at the previous edition in 2023, meaning the continental hierarchy remained unchanged at the top.

For Canada, the result was particularly bittersweet. The hosts came within two points of turning the final completely around after falling two sets behind, but ultimately saw their comeback stopped in the deciding moments of the tie-break.

The United States looked firmly in control after taking the opening set 25–19 and edging an extremely tight second set 26–24. Canada, however, refused to allow the final to become a straightforward American celebration.
The turning point came late in the third set. With the score tied at 25–25, Xander Ketrzynski produced the two decisive points to keep Canada alive at 27–25. The hosts then carried that momentum into the fourth set, where they established control early and eventually forced the deciding set with a 25–17 win.
The tie-break was a different kind of battle. Neither team managed to create a decisive advantage, and Canada twice levelled the score in the closing stages, first at 12–12 and then at 13–13. An error from the Canadian side gave the United States its first match point, and the Americans converted it immediately, closing the championship at 15–13.

Xander Ketrzynski finished as the leading scorer of the final with 26 points, while Matt Anderson and Jake Hanes contributed 18 apiece for the champions.
The statistical balance reflected the contrasting strengths of the two teams: the USA held clear advantages in attack, 64–55, and serving, 7–4 in aces, while Canada dominated at the net with a 12–5 blocking advantage.

The bronze-medal match was considerably less dramatic.
Cuba defeated the Dominican Republic 3–0 (25:22, 25:19, 26:24), securing third place and the final NORCECA ticket to the 2027 World Cup.
Robertlandy Simón, Miguel Ángel López and Marlon Yant each scored 11 points for Cuba, which completed a tournament that once again confirmed its position among the region’s leading men’s teams.

The three World Cup places were therefore distributed according to the final standings: USA, Canada and Cuba.
The 2026 NORCECA Championship thus concluded with the same three countries occupying the podium as in 2023, while all three now have their places secured for the 2027 World Cup in Poland.

But the end of the continental championship does not mean the end of the competition in Moncton.
The tournament also served as the first stage of the NORCECA pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The United States, already qualified for the Olympic tournament as host nation, is excluded from the continental Olympic race. That leaves the next four highest-ranked teams from the NORCECA Championship to compete for the single Olympic quota allocated to the region.

Those four teams are Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
Their qualification for the final stage was determined by the continental championship standings rather than by the World Cup places themselves. Canada reached the semifinals of the championship after winning Pool A unbeaten, while the Dominican Republic secured its place in the Olympic qualification phase despite being eliminated by Cuba in the bronze-medal match. Mexico, meanwhile, secured the necessary fourth position after defeating Puerto Rico 3–0 (26:24, 33:31, 25:16) in the fifth-place match.

The format now changes completely.
There will be no room for a long tournament campaign or a second chance: the four teams enter a direct knockout phase, with the first-ranked team facing the fourth-ranked team and the second-ranked team meeting the third-ranked side. The two semifinal winners will meet for the Olympic ticket, while the semifinal losers will play for third place. Only the winner of the final will qualify for Los Angeles 2028.

The decisive phase begins on September 18, again at the Avenir Centre in Moncton.
Canada will face Mexico at 16:30 local time, followed by Cuba against the Dominican Republic at 19:00. The winners will meet in the final on September 19 at 19:00, with the third-place match scheduled for 16:30.
For the four remaining teams, the stakes are now entirely different from those of the continental championship. The medals are already decided, the World Cup places have been allocated, and the next two matches will determine whether NORCECA sends one more men’s team to Los Angeles alongside hosts United States.

The United States can now celebrate an 11th continental crown and a place at the 2027 World Cup. Canada and Cuba can do the same after securing their World Cup tickets. But in Moncton, there is still one prize left to be claimed — and for Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Mexico, it is the one that carries the Olympic rings.
