Nigeria, Rwanda, Morocco and Cameroon join Tunisia among the winners in Tunis

The second day of the CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship brought another busy programme in Tunis, with five matches played across Pools A to D and several teams taking important steps in their respective groups.

Nigeria opened the day with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chad in Pool C, winning 25:17, 25:17 and 25:16.
The Nigerian side, coached by Japanese head coach Ryan Masajedi, controlled the match from the opening set and immediately turned its attention to Thursday’s meeting with Algeria. Masajedi praised his players for executing the game plan while insisting that the team must remain focused on the next challenge. Nigeria entered the tournament as Zone 3 champions and is looking to use the continental championship as a pathway towards both the 2027 World Championship and Los Angeles 2028.

Rwanda then continued its perfect start in Pool D, overcoming the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-1. The Rwandans took the opening set 25-22 before the DRC levelled the match at 21-25. Rwanda regained control in the third set, 25-21, and closed the match 25-20. Captain Wicklif Dusenge was once again at the centre of the action, finishing as Rwanda’s leading scorer with 27 points. The victory was Rwanda’s second in the tournament after the opening-day sweep of the Central African Republic, leaving the team unbeaten ahead of its decisive Pool D encounter with Cameroon.

Morocco also secured its first victory, defeating The Gambia 3-1 in Pool B. The North Africans won the opening set 25-22, surrendered the second 20-25, then regained control with a 25-18 third set before finishing the match 25-16. Morocco’s captain Ismail Abouddaka was interviewed by CAVB after the victory, while head coach Sandro Passaro’s side moved into contention in a group that also includes defending champions Egypt.

The evening belonged to the hosts. Tunisia defeated Kenya 3-0 (25:15, 25:23, 25:16) to make it two wins from two matches and maintain their perfect record in Pool A. Kenya improved considerably in the second set and even led during parts of the contest, but Tunisia recovered to take it 25-23 before controlling the third. Peter Kamara was Kenya’s top scorer with 12 points, including 10 attacks and two aces, but it was not enough to prevent the hosts from completing another straight-set victory.
Tunisia had already opened the championship with a 3-0 victory over Ghana, and their latest result underlined the significance of playing at home for a team that has won the African title 11 times.
The Carthage Eagles are also among the teams carrying considerable expectations in a tournament where the continental champion will earn Africa’s direct quota for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, while the top three will qualify for the 2027 FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland.

Cameroon closed the day with another straight-set victory, beating the Central African Republic 3-0 (25:15, 25:11, 25:17).
It was Cameroon’s second consecutive win in Pool D after their opening-day victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. The result leaves Cameroon and Rwanda unbeaten ahead of their meeting, while both the DRC and Central African Republic remain without a win after two matches. CAVB’s own match coverage confirmed Cameroon’s second victory in Tunis.

The championship had arrived in Tunis only after CAVB moved it from the originally planned venue of Kinshasa. The change was announced in August following concerns from national federations and authorities over the health situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with Tunisia subsequently taking over as host.

With the second day complete, Tunisia and Cameroon have made perfect starts, while Rwanda have also collected two victories in Pool D. Nigeria and Morocco have now joined the winners’ column, setting up an important third day in which the group picture will begin to take clearer shape.
