Nigeria survive Algeria battle as Cameroon, Egypt and Ghana finish strong

The third day of the CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship produced one of the most intense matches of the tournament so far, with Nigeria coming from behind twice to defeat Algeria 3-2 after more than two hours of play.
The Nigerians eventually prevailed 23:25, 25:19, 21:25, 25:20, 15:12 in a match that repeatedly swung in Algeria’s favour before Nigeria found the decisive edge at the net.
Algeria took the opening set after a closely fought 30 minutes, but Nigeria immediately responded in the second, using its blocking game to level the match. Algeria regained the advantage in the third, only for Nigeria to force a deciding set once again.
The fifth set remained close until the final exchanges, when Nigeria completed the comeback.
Nigeria scored 109 points during the match against Algeria’s 101. The biggest difference came at the block: Nigeria produced 15 winning blocks compared with eight for Algeria. The two teams were almost level in attack, 63-61, while both recorded four aces.
There were also two outstanding individual performances. Algeria’s Farouk Tizit led all scorers with 32 points, including 29 attacks and three blocks, while Nigeria’s Abdulquadri Jaiyeola finished with 28. Ezeofor Udoka added 26 points, including four aces.
The result leaves Nigeria unbeaten after two matches, having already defeated Chad in straight sets. Algeria had also entered the match unbeaten after their 3-0 victory over Chad, making the five-set encounter particularly important in Pool C.

Ghana claimed its first victory of the championship with a 3-0 win over Kenya, taking all three sets 25:20, 25:23 and 25:20.
After losing to hosts Tunisia in their opening match, Kenya needed a response but could not convert its opportunities against a Ghanaian side that remained in control throughout the match.
For Ghana, the victory puts the team firmly back into contention in Pool A, while Kenya now faces a much more difficult route forward after two defeats.
DR Congo recorded its first victory of the tournament by defeating Central African Republic 3-0.
The first two sets were relatively close, with DR Congo winning 25-21 and then edging the second 26-24. The third set was a completely different story, as DR Congo closed the match 15-9 to complete the sweep.
The result gives DR Congo an important boost in Pool D after its earlier defeat to Rwanda. Central African Republic, meanwhile, remains without a victory after two matches.

Defending champions Egypt continued their strong start by defeating Morocco 3-0, winning 25:21, 25:18 and 25:21.
Egypt controlled the match without allowing Morocco to take a set and confirmed their position at the top of Pool B. The reigning African champions had already opened their campaign with a victory over Gambia and now finish the pool stage with a perfect record.
Egypt entered the championship as the highest-ranked African men’s national team in the FIVB World Ranking and as the reigning continental champions after winning the 2023 edition.
Morocco, meanwhile, had entered the match after defeating Gambia on Wednesday, but could not reproduce that performance against the defending champions.

The final match of the day delivered another important result in Pool D, where Cameroon defeated Rwanda 3-1 to finish the pool stage unbeaten.
Rwanda made the stronger start and took the opening set 25-18, but Cameroon responded immediately, winning the second 25-21. The third set proved crucial: Cameroon edged Rwanda 25-23 before taking control of the fourth, 25-19, to complete the comeback.
This is Cameroon’s third consecutive victory and the team finished unbeaten at the top of Pool D.
The result also ended Rwanda’s perfect run. Rwanda had begun the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Central African Republic before beating DR Congo 3-1, but Cameroon proved too strong in the decisive encounter.

With the pool stage moving towards its conclusion, Cameroon have therefore emerged as one of the teams yet to taste defeat in Tunis, alongside the other leading sides who have made strong starts to the championship.
Thursday brought a little bit of everything: a five-set comeback, three straight-set victories and a four-set battle between two unbeaten teams.
And with the knockout phase approaching, the margin for error is becoming considerably smaller.
