Italy: Modena confirm longer layoff for Roberto Russo, with no plans to return to the transfer market

2 min read

Valsa Group Modena will have to manage a significant absence in the middle as Roberto Russo prepares to undergo a period of recovery from a physical problem that has been troubling him since last season.
Speaking on Friday, sporting director Alberto Casadei provided an update on the team’s injury situation following the match against Cucine Lube Civitanova and ahead of Sunday’s SuperLega encounter with Vero Volley Monza.

The news is more reassuring regarding Gabriele Di Martino. The middle blocker’s issue was simply muscular fatigue, and medical examinations have ruled out any serious injury. Russo’s situation, however, requires a more cautious approach. Modena had done everything possible to allow the Italian international to begin the season, but the club has now decided that a longer break is necessary to ensure a more consistent return in the future.

According to Casadei, the recovery period will not be excessively long, although the first 30 days will be particularly important before Russo begins his gradual return to the court. Modena have also confirmed that they will not enter the transfer market to replace him, choosing instead to support the player throughout his rehabilitation.

“Roberto will have all our attention and support,” Casadei stressed, underlining the club’s commitment to helping the middle blocker return to full fitness and remain available consistently.

Beyond the injury update, Casadei also reflected on Modena’s performance against Civitanova. Despite the defeat, the sporting director described the team as “bitterly satisfied”, pointing to another high-level performance and the continued progress of a young squad. The regret remains over missed opportunities that could have secured at least one point, but the club intends to focus on the positives and maintain its upward trajectory.

The next challenge comes on Sunday at Monza, where Modena will aim to achieve the best possible result in a competition in which every match demands maximum concentration. For the Emilia-Romagna side, the immediate objective is clear: keep improving, remain competitive and build consistency as the season unfolds.
