Cev Cup: Zenit St. Petersburg is the first semifinalists
Having defeated the German side Hypo Tirol AlpenVolleys Haching in four sets at home in the second leg of the quarterfinals, Zenit Saint Petersburg from Russia reached the semifinals of the 2020 CEV Cup.
AlpenVolleys gave a hard time to Zenit in the first match, repeating a part of that performance also in the second leg.
The first two sets were extremely difficult for the hosts as the German team led by a 10-6 and 11-6, respectively. In both cases, the team coached by Tuomas Sammelvuo managed to catch up with the opponents. But, unlike the opening set which they end victoriously, in the second set things were opposite. However, Zenit didn’t give rivals a glimmer of hope in the third and fourth sets.
German superstar György Grozer was the top scorer for Zenit with 21 points, while Canadian Jerome Cross scored 15 points for AlpenVolleys.
Tuomas Sammelvuo, head coach of Zenit Saint Petersburg: “I’m really satisfied with the way we played in the third and the fourth sets and I thank my guys for it. But it was a very close game in the first and the second sets. And there is my bad as a coach…”
Stefan Chrtiansky, head coach of Hypo Tirol AlpenVolleys Haching: “We served very well in sets one and two, but after that Zenit pressured us. The Russians served very well, especially float. Zenit is a very good team. I wish them luck in the next round.”
