Italy: Piacenza defeats Milano at tie break, Padova wins the derby over Verona with the same result

3 min read

The regular season of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza ends with a tie break victory in Round 22 (or if you prefer Round 11 of second-leg) of SuperLega Credem Banca. They manages to win against Allianz Milano after a long battle and with this success, the fourth in a row, the team coached by Bernardi rises to 37 points and fifth place in the standings, overtaking Monza (which, however, still have one game to recover).
A real battle that took place this evening in Piacenza, which lasted over two hours and 20 minutes: the top scorer of the match was Georg Grozer who closed his performance with 22 points (including 4 winning blocks), but it is the Iranian middle-blocker Seyed Mousavi elected MVP of the match, with 11 points including 2 aces. For Milano this is the eleventh defeat in competition, after the three victories in row with Modena, Padova and Trento, and this result automatically decides their eighth place in the standings. Patry’s good performance in attack (16 points with 54%) and Ishikawa’s 15 points were not enough. Milano also has a match to play on Wednesday on the Consar Ravenna field, but it is irrelevant for position in the standings of both teams, as Ravenna is already confirmed at 10th place.

On the other today’s match, the last Regular Season match was played this evening at the Kioene Arena in Padova, a duel which saw the hosts face NBV Verona, for the classic Venetian derby. Padova had just returned from the nervous trip to Ravenna, which relegated them safely to eleventh place in the standings, while for Verona the home defeat against LeoShoes Modena forced them to give up hunting for eighth place in the standings (in the hands of Milano). Either way, this was a very balanced match, with 10 blocks for both teams (3 each for Stern and Vitelli among the hosts, and 3 also Jaeschke for Verona), while in attack Padua do better with 48% effectiveness, while Verona stops at 42%. Best scorer and MVP of the match Toncek Stern, who finished with 27 points and 44% in attack, 3 blocks and 5 aces. Best attack percentage for Bottolo with 55% and 16 winning attacks. In the first set, at 10:14, Verona lost middle-blocker Aguenier for an injury.
