VCA Amstetten NÖ narrowly missed a big upset against SK Zadruga Aich/Dob on Thursday evening, as they had a 2:1 lead and a 24:21 in their hand. However, scoring five points in a row, the Carinthians saved themselves in the tie-break and, eventually the favorite celebrated a 3:2 (21:25, 25:21, 22:25, 26:24, 15:13) victory.
Despite the hard-fought success, Aich/Dob can no longer win the Austrian Volley League Top Round because, if Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel wins in three or four sets in Amstetten on Saturday, the leaders of the current charts would have taken first place and would go into the playoffs as the top seeded team.
The Carinthians, on the other hand, who play their last top round game on March 5th against UVC Weberzeile Ried, have to hope that Amstetten will win (at least) a point in the Lower Austria derby.
The top scorers in the JUFA Arena were Nicolai Grabmüller (16), Xander Ketrzynski and Pedro Frances (11 each) for Aich/Dob and newcomer Milutin Pavicevic (26), Aleksandar Veselinovic and Jakub Czyzowski (20 each) for Amstetten, who scored 9 aces (and 0 for the hosts, who also made 40 errors, against 24 of Amstetten).
The AVL Zwischenrunde, the Intermediate Round will already be completed on Friday evening. TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg will face at home current leaders TJ Sokol V/Post SV Wien, and they can celebrate their third win in a row before compete in relegation round. VBC TLC Weiz (3rd), will play on the field of newcomers Hypo Tirol volleyball team, and they are also qualified for the quarter-finals. The team from Innsbruck, on the other hand, will play in relegation round, too.
