Italy: coach De Giorgi makes surprising decision and cuts Zaytsev from World Championship preliminary roster!

2 min read

Ivan Zaytsev won’t play in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championship, which will be played between Poland and Slovenia from August 26 to September 11.

The Italy National Team head coach Ferdinando De Giorgi made a surprising decision at the start of the preparations for the competition, informing fans that the big star was cut from the preliminary list of players, and he left the training camp in Cavalese this morning.

The Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV) issued a note regarding Ivan Zaytsev’s departure from the national team, saying that the player made the decision to leave the gathering of the national team himself after a discussion with the head coach.

At the end of an appropriate path and after careful coaching and team evaluation, I made the decision to communicate to the player that he won’t be part of the 14 for the World Championship. In order to avoid any kind of ’speculation’, I underline that the player has always kept exemplary conduct,” De Giorgi explained.

Zaytsev returned to the national team at the beginning of the summer after he had missed the 2021 CEV European Championships due to an operation following the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The opposite had played a few matches in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Nations League but hadn’t been starter in the Final Eight in Bologna.
De Giorgi will obviously focus on Yuri Romanò and Giulio Pinali with which he won the last EuroVolley as options for the role of opposite.
