Challenge Cup: Melilla, Fonte Bastardo and Olympiacos win first leg of 1/8 Finals

After a match played yesterday, in which Omonia Nicosia down Lindemans Aalst, first leg of 2022/23 CEV Challenge Cup 1/8 finals continued today with other three games.

Spain’s CV Melilla needed five sets to down Sporting CP Lisboa (21:25, 32:30, 25:21, 19:25, 15:11), in a very balanced battle above all in an amazing second set, ended overtime, 32:30, and won by the hosts. Although Sporting was slightly better in blocking, with 14 points from this element against 11 of the rivals, Melilla was better in attack, reception and, above all, in key moments of the game.

If Sporting suffered a defeat, their compatriots from Portugal A.J. Fonte Bastardo celebrated a great victory in Estonia, on the field of SC Duo Tartu, by 1-3 (21:25, 14:25, 25:20, 19:25) while, in third game of the day, Olympiacos Piraeus from Greece defeated at home Bulgaria’s Deya Volley Burgas with a clear 3-0 (25:19, 25:22, 25:18) with 19 points by Slovenian international Tonček Stern, through 73% in attack.
