CEV Cup: Arcada Galati, Modena, Maaseik, Jihostroj and Piacenza win first leg of 1/8 Finals
3 min read
First Leg of 2022/23 CEV Cup 1/8 Finals continued today with other five games, after two played yesterday.
Romania’s C.S. Arcada Galati open the day with a four sets win in Finland, on the field of Savo Volley Kuopio, 1-3 (27:25, 21:25, 15:25, 20:25), and with an away win also for super favorite Valsa Group Modena in Turkey, on the field of Arkas Izmir, currently at fifth place in EfelerLigi. The game ended as predicted in just three sets (20:25, 25:27, 18:25), and Turkish opposite Adis Lagumdzija ended as top scorer with 17 points and 52%, while Tommaso Rinaldi also contributed with 14 and the same percentage. Canadian Nicholas Hoag scored 14 on the other side of the net and Adis’ brother, Mirza, 10.
Lindaren Volley Amriswil, from Switzerland, almost staged an upset with a 2-0 lead against Belgium’s Greenyard Maaseik, however the visiting team managed to level the score and, then, also to take a very intense fifth set, ended overtime. Partially it was 29:27, 25:18, 22:25, 22:25 and 19:21. John Wendt ended the game as top scorer with 26 points, but he wasn’t enough. Adam Bartos and Athanasios Protopsaltis top-scored the winning side with 17 and 16 points each.
Defeat also for Amriswil’s compatriot Volley Schönenwerd who, after taking first set without problem, suffered a home defeat against Czech Republic’s Jihostroj České Budejovice, 1-3 (25:15, 22:25, 18:25, 22:25). Interestingly, this game ended without a single winning block!
The day ended with another four sets win, the one of Italy’s Bluenergy Daiko Volley Piacenza, without Simon, over Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahçe HDI Istanbul, 3-1 (25:13, 24:26, 25:15, 25:20)
| PHOTOGALLERY OF THE MATCH. Fenerbahçe so continued their quite disappointing season (now they are in fact only at sixth place in EfelerLigi) with lot of up and down (and lot of errors, like in this match). Yoandy Leal ended the game as top scorer with 17 points and 52% in attack, while Yuri Romanó and Ricardo Lucarelli also contributed with 16 each.
