Poland: Jastrzębski KO again – Bełchatów prevail in big match of Round 13 despite Hadrava’s 8 aces! Lublin and Olsztyn ok

2 min read

Other three games of 2022/23 Plusliga Round 13 were played today.

Leaders Jastrzębski Węgiel started to show weaknesses, and PGE Skra Bełchatów was the second team to take advantage of this.
In the big match, they won at tie break (20:25, 25:20, 17;25, 27:25, 15:11) in front of their home fans in two hours and 16 minutes.
For Bełchatów, this was the third victory in the last four matches in PlusLiga, and the fourth victory in the last five games in all competitions, including CEV Cup in Narbonne.
On the other hand, Jastrzębski aren’t used to losing in the current season. Before today’s clash, the vice-champions only once left the court defeated, unlike the hosts, who in the current season presented themselves below expectations. Marcelo Méndez’s side quite unexpectedly didn’t bear its role of the favorite against Bełchatów, and one of the reasons for that could be the fact that they played without their starting setter Benjamin Toniutti, who contracted an ankle injury.
As many as three players on the winning side shared the top scorer’s award at the end of the match, each scoring 19 points: Dutch-Italian Dick Kooy, Serb Aleksandar Atanasijević, and Mateusz Bieniek. Atanasijević also had 5 blocks, while Bieniek made 77% of attacks (17/22).
Czech Jan Hadrava put down 27 points for Jastrzębski, including an amazing number of 8 aces!

The day continued with another tie break, the one of LUK Lublin on the field of Ślepsk Malow Suwałki – LUK Lublin (25:22, 23:25, 17:25, 25:20, 10:15) while, in the evening, Indykpol AZS Olsztyn down Cuprum Lubin in straight sets (26:24, 25:21, 25:16). USA National Team Middle blocker Taylor Averill was perfect on the winning side with 14 points, 100% in attack (8/8), 1 ace and 5 winning blocks!
