CEV Cup: Modena suffer against Lüneburg but progress to quarterfinals and Piacenza joins them. Maaseik go there via Golden Set!
2 min read
Today we know the name of three teams qualified to the quarterfinals of the 2023 CEV Men’s Volleyball Cup.
The first one is Greenyard Maaseik, who literally rose from the dead in the Czech Republic. The Belgians were beaten 3-0 (27:25, 25:21, 25:16) by Jihostroj České Budějovice, after which the hosts annulled a 3-1 loss in the first leg. However, Maaseik prevailed in the all-deciding golden set (15-9) to progress to the quarterfinals. Ferre Reggers was Maaseik’s best scorer today with 21 points and, interestingly, he was the only player in double digit on the winning side, while the Dutchman Stijn van Schie grounded 20 for Jihostroj and Slovak Peter Ondrovič made five blocks.
Italy’s Valsa Group Modena eliminated SVG Lüneburg defeating the Germans 3-1 (27:25, 23:25, 25:17, 25:21) and avenging their defeat in the first leg. A result that’s worth qualifying for the quarterfinals.
This match was anything but easy for the SuperLega side, always hanging in the balance in the score. Giovanni Sanguinetti, Lorenzo Sala, and Turk Adis Lagumdžija scored 12 points each for Modena, while Brazilian Bruno Rezende, named MVP of the match, served five aces, including a decisive streak in third set. Sanguinetti and Serb Dragan Stanković made four blocks each, while Salvatore Rossini had 83% reception (23 digs, 43% excellent). American Jordan Ewert scored 19 points for Lüneburg.
Objective achieved for another Italian side, Bluenergy Daiko Volley Piacenza, which also qualified for the quarterfinals by beating the Romanians of C.S. Arcada Galați also in the second leg. The game, ended in four sets (29:31, 25:10, 25:12, 25:23), started downhill for the home side, with a first set won by the guests overtime. But then, however, Piacenza decisively took the next two sets needed for qualification. The Frenchman Luka Basic topped the winning side with 16 points, while Edoardo Caneschi set up four blocks and Alexandru Rață scored 14 for Galati.
Tomorrow PGE Skra Belchatow will face Galatasaray HDI Sigorta Istanbul in the game that will be determined the last quarterfinalist.
