CEV Cup: Modena destroy Ljubljana and fly to semifinals! Roeselare and Piacenza join them via Golden Set
2 min read
Waiting for the game between PGE Skra Belchatow and Čez Karlovarsko, scheduled tomorrow, we know the name of first three teams qualified to the semifinals of 2022/23 CEV Cup.
The Golden Set rewarded Bluenergy Daiko Volley Piacenza, who completed a successful comeback against Montpellier HSC VB in the quarterfinals of the competition.
With a huge comeback at home against the defending champions of France (but now only at 7th place in the current standings of Ligue A), the italian side pfficially reached the semis.
After the four-sets-defeat in the first leg, the guys around Massimo Botti needed to win 3-0 or 3-1 and then also win the Golden Set.
They chose the easiest 3-0 and Golden Set combo, and the greatest protagonist on the winning side was Yuri Romanò, author of 21 points including six aces, while Cuban-Brazilian Yoandy Leal also contributed with 4 blocks.
Théo Faure scored 18 points on the losing side, who said good bye to the competition.
Piacenza will play against Knack Roeselare, who proved better than their fellow countrymen Greenyard Maaseik in the semifinals.
Roeselare prevailed 3-1 in the first leg of the Belgian derby, but the rivals react today with a straight-set and hard-fought great victory, partially 25:23, 28:26 and 28:26, so Golden Set had to define the team that’ll go to the top 4.
In it, Roeselare won 17-15.
No problems for Italy’s Valsa Group Modena in the second leg against Slovenia’s ACH Volley Ljubljana. Andrea Giani’s guys dominated the necessary first two sets and then, with basically all backups to the court, took the also third, finishing 3-0 (25:16, 25:16, 25:20) in front of their home fans.
