5 min read
The exciting quarterfinals series continued today after a Game 4 advance played yesterday in which italian titleholders Cucine Lube Civitanova down WithU Verona in four sets.
The result?
After Verona’s 2-0 lead, now the series is 2-2!
And today the other virdicts: Itas Trentino secures a playoff semifinal spot with a resounding victory, while ALL the other clashes extend to a fifth game!
In short, after four games:
• Civitanova and Verona are tied at 2-2
• Milano and Perugia are tied at 2-2
• Modena and Piacenza are tied at 2-2
• Trento accesses the Semifinals by beating Monza 3 games to 1
In details, Itas Trentino was the only team who has secured their place in the Playoff Semifinals with a resounding 0-3 (22:25, 20:25, 19:25) win on the field of Vero Volley Monza. Kaziyski (50% in attack) and Michieletto 58% with an excellent performance in attack from the second line) led the winners with 12 points each, while Lavia also contributed with 11 points through 57% in attack and 3 of his team’s 5 aces.
On the losing side, Grozer was the most effective with 14 points scored.
Despite already advancing, Itas Trentino will have to wait until April 10 to find out the name of their opponent in the next round of the competition.
The team that will face Itas Trentino in the semifinals will either be Modena or Piacenza, with the two teams set to play the fifth and final game of their match-up on that day.
Moreover, after this season’s elimination from Champions League in quarterfinals, Trento is the first club to be sure to partecipate in the next edition of one European Cup, Champions League or CEV Cup!
Gas Sales Bluenergy Volley Piacenza completed a remarkable comeback in the quarterfinal series against Valsa Group Modena. After trailing 0-2, they won two matches in a row 3-0 with authority to tie the series 2-2. Today partially it was (25:20, 25:21, 25:20), a victory that has given them the confidence and positive momentum they need to face Modena in the fifth and final game on the field of the rivals.
Modena, on the other hand, suffered their THIRD consecutive defeat in straight sets including the one in CEV Cup Final on Wednesday, and will need to find their form quickly if they hope to progress to the semifinals. Moreover, they added the injury of setter Bruninho, forced to left the field at 11-17 of third set due a right ankle’s injury.
In the match against Piacenza, they struggled with their attack, only managing 36% compared to the rivals’ 55%. The best in Modena’s jersey is Turkish opposite Lagumdzija (next season to Lube Civitanova) who, however, attacked only at 36%. Lot of ups and downs also for Ngapeth (10/23, 1 error, 43% in attack), not existent Rinaldi with only 3/15.
Among the Piacenza players, Leal and Lucarelli were the best with 14 and 13 points, respectively, with the latter with an excellent 71%.
Finally, Allianz Powervolley Milano secured another thrilling 3-2 (25:15, 19:25, 19:25, 28:26, 15:13) victory over Sir Safety Susa Perugia in their Quarterfinal match.
The match was played in front of 4,696 volleyball fans at the Allianz Cloud, with the atmosphere heating up after the first set.
A great Milano managed to win the first sets even 25-15, but then the Club World Champions, led by Leon, reacted and take second and third sets with the score of 19-25. To led the comeback are Milano’s outside hitters Ishikawa and Mergarejo (named MVP of the match with 22 points to his name), both decisive in the fourth set ended overtime, 28-26. And then an exciting tie break in which the hosts were decisive from the second line. Milano in fact, after Porro’s break from the service line, managed to keep the led and then close with Loser’s block 15-13.
With Herrera MVP with 22 points, Ishikawa 18 and Patry for Milano, in Perugia, Leon with 22 points was the most effective player, follower by Herrera who added 19.
