Zenit Kazan is the most popular awarded team of Russia, but they failed to claim the title for 4 seasons in a row.
But now they did it, by winning their 11th title (6 against the same Dynamo Moscow, and they defeated them in all attempts) in club’s history, and they did it in a resounding way: only 3 losses in 2022/23 season, only one in the playoffs. Zero in final against Dynamo Moscow.
After two home victories 3-0 and 3-1, in fact, the giants from Tatarsan region won also a dramatic Game 3 at tie break (25:23, 25:23, 17:25, 28:30, 13:15) after an epic comeback from 2-0.

Alexey Verbov’s side risked a lot in fourth set, in which they had a 20-24 lead, before closing it overtime, and in decisive fifth one they had to recover from 11-8 and from 12-10 but eventually the visiting side were able to close set and game, despite a nightmarish reception: 20% positivity and 16 aces suffered!
A fact, however, that wasn’t enough to stop a super Dmitry Volkov (21 points with 74% in attack, 5 blocks and 2 aces) and Sam Deroo (22 points, 5 blocks and 57%).
The hosts, on the other hand, suffered the injury of setter and captain Pavel Pankov, replaced by Sventitskis in fourth set.
Good performance, however, for Tsvetan Sokolov with 27 points and 6 aces, and for Anton Semyshev (23 and 63%).

With this result, Maxim Mikhaylov can boast 8 titles, all conquered with Zenit Kazan’s jersey, becoming the most titled. player of Russian Championship after another monster of world of volleyball, Sergey Tetyukhin, with 10.
8 titles, 7 on the field and one on the bench, as a head coach, also for Verbov.
But this match was also the last one played by middle blocker Alexander Volkov, London 2012 Olympic Champion who, at 38, announced his retirement.
