4 min read
The exciting series of 2023/24 Del Monte® Coppa Italia Quarterfinals started today with first three games, and not without upsets, waiting for the big match between Sir Susa Vim Perugia and Valsa Group Modena scheduled tomorrow!
Although they celebrated a four sets win on the same field last Saturday, Cucine Lube Civitanova lose the game at Opiquad Arena against the hosts Mint Vero Volley Monza, 3-1 (31:33, 25:20, 25:15, 25:23), after winning a thrilling first set.
At the end of a very balanced game with lot of ups and downs in both sides, last season vice-champions of Italy have been eliminated in Italian Cup quarterfinals for the third year in a row (eliminated by Milano, in both previous two editions).
The visiting side won the nail-biting first set, closed with a winning block after canceling as many as 7 set balls to Monza, while the second set is very balanced too, at least until the end, when the hosts made the difference above all in blocking (6 to 1) and from the service line (4 to 2).
Monza managed to surpass, by winning also the third set while, in the decisive fourth one, Civitanova suffered the play of the rivals with a dangerous -7 before a desperate attempt to re-open the game that is worth the 20-19, culminating in two match balls canceled, 24-23. However, an attack out from Nikolov send Monza to their first Italian Cup Semifinal in club history!
19 points from Adis Lagumdzija, 16 from Aleksandar Nikolov and 11 from Marlon Yant were not enough for Lube, who suffered the rivals’ block (12 points from this element) and the blow of top scorer Arthur Szwarc, author of 24 points, including 1 ace and 5 winning blocks, also named MVP of the game. Double digit also for Stephen Maar (18), Ran Takahashi (15) and Gianluca Galassi (12).
Itas Trentino, Winter Champions of Superlega, level up their role as favorite after beating Rana Verona with a clear 3-0 (25:14, 25:19, 25:23).
At ilT quotidiano Arena, Italians titleholders won the 46th Adige derby against Verona to take the ticket for a semifinal in which they’ll face Monza.
To make the difference a very good performance from the service line, but also in defense, literally dominating first two sets, also thanks to Michieletto, Rychlicki and Lavia’s counterattacks. Also in third set, despite the rivals tried to re-open the game until the 19-19, the hosts managed to close with the minimum gap, led by MVP Alessandro Michieletto, top scorer with 16 points through 56% in attack and one block, and also from middle blockers Jan Kozamernik, who also contributed with 4 winning blocks, and Marko Podrascanin, who closed the game with 71% in attack.
Close the picture the never ending game between Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, without Leal, and Allianz Milano, that has been solved only at tie break, and st 20-22 of the fifth set, 2-3 (16:25, 25:20, 21:25, 25:22, 20:22)!
Milano’s victory came after a grueling match lasting over two hours. Key contributors for Milano are Yuki Ishikawa with 19 points, Ferre Reggers with 18 and Agustin Loser with 16, led by setter and MVP Paolo Porro.
