Austria: Waldviertel struggled more than expected but win the derby against Amstetten

3 min read

Although Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel start the Lower Austria derby against VCA Amstetten NÖ on Wednesday evening as the clear favorite, the third-placed Powerfusion Austrian Volley League side struggled a lot against the eighth-placed team but, eventually, after 137 minutes of play they managed to win the game 3-2 (21:25, 20:25, 25:22, 25:16, 17:15).
Amstetten even had a 14:12 advantage in the tie-break and three match points, but the hosts were able to close the game at their first one. Top scorers of the day were Krzysztof Gulak (19), Niklas Stooß (18) and Koendert Daan Streutker (13) for the winners, and Kirill Krasnevski (19), Maximilian Schober (17), Samuel Jackman and Yousri Anegay with 15 each for Amstetten.
On Saturday, Waldviertel will host TJ Sokol V/Post SV Wien (7 p.m. local time), while Amstetten will welcome VBK Wörther-See-Löwen Klagenfurt (6:30 p.m.), their closest rivals in the fight for the last playoff ticket.
The big match of the day is SK Zadruga Aich/Dob against TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg (7 p.m.) and, in the first half of the season, the second-place team celebrated a confident home win.
At the bottom of the table is VBC TLC Weiz, but they are only two points to eighth place. On Saturday evening the Styrians will welcome the sixth team, UVC McDonald’s Ried (7.30 p.m.).
In the first of two Sunday games, defending champions, league leaders and undefeated HYPO TIROL volleyball team will be visiting UVC Holding Graz (3:30 p.m.).
