Italy: Round 16 starts today – Cisterna stun Piacenza. 1 point for Catania, and a great comeback for Verona. Trento and Perugia ok

In a thrilling Round 16 of 2023/24 SuperLega CredemBanca, Round 5
of second leg, fans witnessed several nail-biting clashes, including the one between Farmitalia Catania and Cucine Lube Civitanova, that delivered a five-set thriller, ending 2-3 (25:13, 14:25, 28:26, 15:25, 10:15) in favor of Civitanova.
After a first set dominated by the last-placed side at PalaCatania, Civitanova managed to react winning a game that consolidated their fourth place in the standings with 29 points. MVP of the game Barthlemy Chinenyeze, for the second game in a row with 18 points including 1 ace, 2 blocks and 15/17 in attack, but decisive was also Simone Anzani, whi contributed with 7 of the winners’ 17 blocks and Aleksandar Nikolov, who added 17 points through 54% in attack and 4 blocks.
Top scorer of the match match, however, Paul Buchegger with the jersey of Catania who scored 27 points, but double digit also for Jacopo Massari, 17 punti, Luigi Randazzo, 16, and Serbian middle-blocker Nemanja Masulovic.
Also Mint Vero Volley Monza and Rana Verona engaged in a fierce battle, with Rana Verona edging out a 2-3 (25:23, 26:24, 23:25, 22:25, 11:15) victory after an epic comeback. Rok Mozic was the man of the match for Verona, scoring 25 points, while Monza’s Arthur Szwarc put up a commendable fight with 20 points. But Monza not only lose the game, but lose also Ran Takahashi, at 17-17 of third set due an ankle injury.
Cisterna Volley triumphed over Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza in a 3-1 (23:25, 25:23, 25:22, 25:19) great victory. Theo Faure stood out for the winners with a whopping 25 points in four sets, contributing significantly to the win, while Ricardo Lucarelli’s effort for Piacenza, scoring 20 points, was noteworthy despite the defeat.
In a more one-sided encounter, Itas Trentino swept Allianz Milano 3-0 (25:21, 25:19, 25:21). It was another good performance for Italians titleholders, who boasted 5 winning blocks in first set, 58% in attack in the second and 4 aces in the last one, with Alessandro Michieletto top scorer with 16 points including 2 winning blocks, 2 aces and 50% in attack, and MVP Kamil Rychlicki who added 12.
This game also marked the return of legendary Matey Kaziyski, now with the jersey of Milano, but awarded by President Bruno Da Re due his 433 games played for Trento, including several titles in which he was great protagonist.
Yuki Ishikawa, with 12 points, was the most prolific player for Milano, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.
Sir Susa Vim Perugia also secured a comfortable 3-0 (25:18, 25:23, 25:20) victory over Gioiella Prisma Taranto.
Predictions respected in a game in which block and attack were decisive, with the hosts had 59% of team performance compared to Taranto’s 44%, and 13 winning blocks to the rivals’ only 6.
Mvp of the match Kamil Semeniuk, with 12 points and 71% in attack, but double digit also for Herrera (13 points), Plotnytskyi (11) and Flavio (11 including 6 winning blocks), while Solè added 9 with 5 blocks. Decisive also captain Wilfredo Leon who in the first set contributed with 2 aces, including the one that closed this set.
For Taranto, opposite Kyle Russell tried to rally their team but fell short.
Tomorrow, January 25, 2024, Pallavolo Padova will face Valsa Group Modena.
