Champions League: Monza close first week of Pool Stage with a thrilling win over Olympiacos

Winning debut for Mint Vero Volley Monza in their first match played ever in CEV Champions League, 3-2 (20:25, 25:20, 26:28, 25:23, 15:8) over Olympiakos Piraeus in a game valid for Pool B that closed first week of the competition.
Thus Monza completed a perfect week for Italian Volleyball with 11th success in as many games played throughout all European Cups!
To make the difference Ibrahim Lawani, who started from the bench and entered the field starting from second set in place of Arthur Szwarc, and closed the game with 18 points, 50% in attack, 1 ace and MVP award in a match lasting over two hours at Monza’s Opiquad Arena, supported by Zaytsev’s 13 and Averill’s 11.
Monza battled hard, recovering from a 1-2 set deficit to ultimately dominate the final tie-break set with a score of 15-8. On the other hand, Olympiacos played until the 1-2 of third set, and then collapsed collecting several fatal errors, and 23 points (2 aces and 54% in attack) from Serbian superstar Aleksandar Atanasijevic were not enough.
Ibrahim Lawani, named MVP of the match, described the evening as “magical,” crediting the fans’ support and the team’s hard work.
Yesterday, in their opening match of the Pool B, Fenerbahçe Medicana defeated Germany’s Helios Grizzlys Giesen 3-0 (25:23, 25:23, 25:22) in an away game.
