Fabian Drzyzga is coming home.
After two seasons away from Polish volleyball, including his recent spell with Fenerbahçe Medicana Istanbul, the two-time World Champion is returning to the TAURON Liga.
And perhaps the biggest surprise is not the transfer itself, but the destination: he will join Cuprum Stilon Gorzów rather than one of Poland’s traditional powerhouses.
At first glance, the move may seem unexpected.
But look a little closer at what is being built in Gorzów Wielkopolski, and the decision starts to make considerably more sense.
The club dropped a genuine transfer bomb on Tuesday by announcing his arrival.
For the 36-year-old setter, it represents a return to Polish courts after several years abroad — a move that would have been difficult to imagine only a year ago.
The ambitions in Gorzów, however, have changed.
The club is putting together a considerably stronger roster for the 2026/27 campaign and wants to give its supporters something more than another season spent looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation battle.
Head coach Hubert Henno will remain in charge, once again taking on the task of developing a group that combines established experience with young talent.
The potential starting lineup already looks particularly interesting, and Drzyzga should have no trouble finding his place in it. He could form a diagonal partnership with another Polish player returning home: opposite Dawid Dulski.
Dulski left Poland a year ago looking to rebuild his career after a difficult 2024/25 season in Nysa. His move to France proved to be exactly what he needed. In Ligue A, with Nice Volley Ball’s jersey, the opposite rediscovered his best form and subsequently put himself firmly back on the radar of the TAURON Liga.
Together, Drzyzga and Dulski could become one of the most intriguing setter-opposite combinations in the league.
And if anyone has earned the right to choose his next destination, it is Drzyzga. His résumé places him among the most decorated setters in Polish volleyball history.
The 36-year-old began taking his first serious steps at Tytan AZS Częstochowa before moving to AZS Politechnika Warszawska in the 2012/13 season.
From 2013 to 2017, he was a key part of Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, returning to the club for another spell between 2020 and 2024.
In between his two periods in Rzeszów, Drzyzga gained valuable international experience in Greece and Russia.
He left Poland again after the 2024/25 season, first joining China’s Shanghai Bright before continuing his career with Fenerbahçe Medicana Istanbul.
Wherever he has played, trophies have tended to follow.
In the TAURON Liga, primarily with Resovia, he won the Polish championship in 2015 — one of four Polish championship medals in his collection — as well as the Polish Super Cup. His international club honours include a CEV Cup title and a Champions League silver medal. In fact, his habit of reaching the podium began long before he established himself as a senior star.
The same is true of his international career.
He became a key figure for Poland and earned 124 caps for the national team. He was part of the side that produced one of the greatest achievements in Polish volleyball history, winning back-to-back World Championship titles in 2014 and 2018.
His international résumé also includes three European Championship medals, as well as medals from the World Cup and Volleyball Nations League.
Now, after years of playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe and beyond, Drzyzga is heading back to Poland — but this time, not to one of the traditional giants.
Instead, he is joining a Cuprum Stilon Gorzów project that appears determined to make itself impossible to ignore.
And that may be the most interesting part of the story.
