Yuri Romanò joins PGE Projekt Warszawa: Italy’s World Champion makes a move to Poland

A major transfer in European volleyball is now official: Yuri Romanò is the new opposite of PGE Projekt Warszawa, with the 29-year-old Italian international making the move to Poland after establishing himself among the leading attackers in the world.

A two-time World Champion with Italy, he was also named the Best Opposite at the most recent World Championship, and his arrival represents a major statement of intent from the Warsaw club.

The announcement itself was given a setting worthy of such a signing.
The official promotional video and photoshoot were produced inside the Canaletto Hall at Warsaw’s Royal Castle, creating a striking Polish-Italian connection.
For PGE Projekt Warszawa, signing a player of Romanò’s calibre is much more than simply adding another attacking option.

“Today, Polish and Italian volleyball represent absolutely the highest level in the world, both in terms of the strength of their leagues and the success of their national teams,” said Piotr Gacek, president and sporting director of PGE Projekt Warszawa in club’s official statement. “That makes bringing in a leader from the very top of the game an enormous source of pride for us and a clear signal of where we want to go as a club.”

Gacek also highlighted the challenge of bringing one of Italy’s leading players to Poland.

“Romanò is a two-time World Champion with Italy and the Best Opposite at the last World Championship. Italian players have excellent conditions at home and rarely decide to leave the country, so bringing a player of this calibre to Poland was a significant challenge. We are convinced that he will give our fans in Warsaw plenty of reasons to celebrate.”

For Romanò, meanwhile, the move represents both a new challenge and an important next step in his career.

“Joining PGE Projekt Warszawa is a great challenge for me and an important step in my career. The Polish league has been regarded as one of the strongest in the world for many years, and I have been hugely impressed by the project being built in Warsaw,” Romanò said.

“I cannot wait for my first training sessions in Warsaw, to meet my new teammates and play in front of our fans. I am here to fight for the highest goals.”

The choice of venue for the announcement added another layer to the story.
The Canaletto Hall takes its name from Bernardo Bellotto, the celebrated Italian painter better known as Canaletto, whose 18th-century paintings captured Warsaw and now adorn the historic interiors of the Royal Castle.
A fitting backdrop, then, for a transfer that brings together two of the great powers of European volleyball — Poland and Italy.

Romanò will join his new team after EuroVolley 2026, ready to begin a new chapter in Warsaw.
And with a World Champion of his calibre now heading to the Polish capital, PGE Projekt Warszawa have made their ambitions very clear.
They are not coming to watch the biggest European nights. They want to be part of them.
