Italy: fifth final in a row for Lube! Trento defeated at tie break in decisive Game 5

4 min read

Cucine Lube Civitanova celebrated their eight finals in club history, and the fifth in a row with a tie break win (27:29, 25:21, 21:25, 25:15, 15:11) over Trentino Volley in decisive Game 5.

Lube (2nd-seed) completed a dream comeback in the semi-final series, which they played without Osmany Juantorena, of the 2021/22 SuperLega Credem Banca against No.3 Trentino, led by Cuban Robertlandy Simón (20 points; 5 blocks and 4 aces), who had 73% attack (11/15).
The key moment occurred before the 4th set when Lube’s head coach Gianlorenzo Blengini chose to leave underperforming Ivan Zaytsev on the bench and send Puerto Rican-American Gabriel García. Lube, the reigning Italian champions, will thus be able to defend the title against their long-time rivals, Sir Safety Conad Perugia, who defeat Modena in four sets.

About the match itself, Trento starts better in first set, with a 3-7 lead thanks to middle-blockers: Podrascanin from the service line and Lisinac, in blocking as well as in attack. Lucarelli reply with a break until 6-8, but Civitanova waste the ball of a possible -1. A counterattack from Kaziyski is worth the 7-11, forcing coach Blengini to ask for a time out. Lucarelli shorten with the point of 11-13, and also the 13-14. The hosts manage to tie the score at 16 with Simon who take advantage from an Anzani’s error, and they even surpass with an error (the only one in this set, through 80% in attack) of captain Kaziyski. The same Kaziyski put down the point of a new lead, 17-18, and also the point of 20-20. Simon reply with attack and ace of 21-20. In a very high level match, Lisinac canceled the point of a possible 24-22, and Kaziyski signs thre points in a row. Lisinac blocks Zaytsev for the decisive 27-29.

Trento try to escape also in second set, with a block from Podrascanin on Simon, but the first block of the day of the hosts over Michieletto is worth the 6-6. Yant put down two balls in a row for the 9-9, with a balance until the decisive 15-12, with a block from Anzani on Michieletto, and error from
Kaziyski and a winning counterattack from Lucarelli. A block over Lavia is worth the 19-14, and Trento struggle a lot in attack. Useless the desperate attempt for a comeback, as the hosts close with a clear 25-21.

Third set and, with the errors from Yant and Simon, coach Blengini stops the game at 2-5. Kaziyski put down the counterattack of 2-6, but Yant try to recover with the ace of 4-6. Lisinac and Sbertoli block Lucarelli for a heavy 5-10, forcing Blengini to stop the game again. Lucarelli react with the point of 8-12, but Lisinac close in attack and Lavia too, for the point of 10-16. Simon with two aces, 14-18, in a row try a comeback, but it’s too late and Trento close again with a great ball from Kazyiski, 21-25.

In fourth set only Lube on the field, with Gabi Garcia who signs the ace of 8-3, and also the point of 11-6, that force coach Lorenzetti to stop the game. However, Trento think to tie break, and the rivals sign the point of 17-7, and then they close with Gabi Garcia, with a clear 25-15.

It was a great Lube also in decisive fifth set: two blocks from Gabi and
Simon mark the 3-0. Michieletto signs the ace of 2-3, but are the hosts that control the game at the swap of roles: 8-6. Trento struggled with Anzani’s serves, 9-6, but they don’t give up with two attacks from Michieletto, 9-8. Final is amazing, with Lucarelli who signs a fantastic point that is worth 11-9, Simon blocks Kaziyski and put down also the attack of 13-9. Gabi Garcia attacks out the ball of 13-11, but Lisinac’s error in serving give the match point to the hosts, who close with the ace from Simon, 15-11.
