Italy: Perugia defeat Modena in four sets to reach the final for fourth time in a row!

3 min read

Regular season winners Sir Safety Conad Perugia are first finalists!
With a thrilling four sets victory (19:25, 25:20, 27:25, 25:15) over No.4 Modena Volley in decisive Game 5, Nikola Grbic’s side take the ticket for final for fourth time in a row, all against Lube (who on the other semifinal defeat Trento at tie break).
Once again, block is a very effective weapon, with 15 points from this element (against 7 of Modena), but the winners were better also in attack (57% vs. 45%)
MVP of the match an excellent Anderson, author of 21 points and 74% in attack (20/27), but double digit also for Leon (19 points, with 6 aces!) and Rychlicki (19 points and 67% in attack).

Modena, on the other hand, couldn’t count on injured Cuban-Brazilian Yoandy Leal, without whom Andrea Giani’s team failed to find the continuity it had shown in previous matches in the series, not resisting the growth of the rivals that started in the second set.

About the match, not a good start for the hosts. Balance until 7-7, and then Modena, with a block on Rychlicki can escape without lot of difficult, 10-13 and then even 12-16. Stankovic and Ngapeth push the guests until the end of set, closed at second set ball, 19-25.
Anderson’s 6 winning blocks were not enough, as Modena played a very high level in attack with 64%, with 6
points from Ngapeth and 5 from Abdel Aziz.

Perugia start in an almost perfect way with an 8-4 lead, and then Anderson put down also the ball of 11-6. Modena try to react, but two aces from Leon are worth the 16-14.
The guests don’t give up, but Perugia is better in blocking, with 5 points from this element over Ngapeth and 6 until this moment. Anderson close 25-20 over a Modena with a disappointing 27% attack, with only 2/9 of Ngapeth. O/3 of Van Garderen, and 3/9 of Nimir.

What happens now? Modena start better in third set, with a 5-9 lead, holding the reins of the set until the 12-14. Two counterattacks from Anderson and Rychlicki reopen the set, and at 18-18 great show with an impossible defense of Nimir.
The break of the hosts come in blocking, with a point from this element of Solè over Nimir:
20-19. The same Nimir signs the 23-23, and Van Garderen cancel first set ball. At third attempt, however, Anderson close 27-25 despite 8 direct errors in attack.

Perugia starts with middle-blocker Mengozzi on the field in place of Ricci, and an error of Bruno from the service line is worth the first break for the hosts: 4-2. Then Giannelli blocks Ngapeth, Rychlicki score an ace on libero Rossini, attack from Giannelli and an ace from Leon for a heavy 14-8. The hosts were excellent in blocking, with 15 points from this element at the end of the match, and another ace from Leon is worth the 16-8. The one-sided set is closed with a clear 25-15, and Perugia is in final!
