Italy: Perugia tie semifinals against Modena with a 1-3 win on the road!
2 min read
Regular season absolute leaders Sir Safety Conad Perugia conquered the PalaPanini, showing to be still alive in the playoff semi-final series of the 2021/22 Italian Superlega CredemBanca against No.4 Leo Shoes PerkinElmer Modena.
Perugia brought back Game 1 to their PalaBarton after winning Easter Sunday’s duel with a score of 3-1 (23:25, 25:22, 21:25, 21:25) and tying the series at 1-1.
It was a truly hard-fought and spectacular match, played at very high level just like the first one…and with a lot of tension on the court, again.
The absence of Yoandy Leal, who was disqualified for 4 matches, certainly left Modena without one of its pillars in attack. And referees still today had a difficult task to put team members under control today, being forced to react with 2 red cards (one to Perugia’s Roberto Russo and one to the member of the Modena staff, both causing a commotion from their respective benches) in the most important moment of 3rd set, at 19-19 (Modena trailed by 7 before that), removing Earvin Ngapeth from the service line the moment he served an ace. That made the Frenchman furious and to the surprise of many, he wasn’t given even a yellow card for his gestures.
Perugia did a great job coming back in the opening set from 5-10. American Matthew Anderson top-scored Perugia with 18 points, while Argentine Sebastian Solé made 6 out of his team’s 18 blocks. MVP award to libero Massimo Colaci.
