Champions League: Jastrzebski, Perugia and Halkbank first semifinalists! Lube eliminated at Golden Set

Some of 2022/23 CEV Champions League verdicts are here, as the competition now reached an exciting phase, with first three semifinalists confirmed: Poland’s Jastrzębski Węgiel, Italy’s Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia, and Turkey’s Halkbank Ankara.

The first to secured their place in the semi-finals today are Jastrzębski Węgiel after a dominant performance against Germany’s VfB Friedrichshafen in the both matches. They won the 2nd leg game also in straight sets (25:14, 25:20, 25:16), led by Tomasz Fornal, top scorer with 10 points and 64% in ayyack, while Trevor Clevenot also contributed with 9 points. Tim Peter was the most efficient player for the losing side with 10 points.

In the second quarterfinal clash, Italian powerhouse Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia faced off against Berlin Recycling Volleys. They won the first leg of the quarterfinals with a score of 3-1, and they continued their winning streak this time with a hard-fought victory over the rivals in the second leg, this time at tie btrak (24:26, 25:21, 22:25, 25:17, 15:13). Oleh Plotnytskyi was named MVP of the match with 18 points, three aces, and a very good 61% in attack. Double digit also for Leon (18 points with 3 aces and 4 blocks), Rychlicki (16), Solé (15 with 4 blocks too), and Russo (14 with 5 winning blocks).

The third quarterfinal match between Halkbank Ankara and Cucine Lube Civitanova was probably the most exciting one. Lube had won the home match with a score of 3-1 (31:29, 25:20, 23:25, 20:25), to reverse the result of first leg, but Halkbank fought back in the Golden set to emerge victorious with a score of 15-12.
Nimir Abdel-Aziz was the most prolific player with 26 points for the winners,while Ivan Zaytsev was the top scorer of the match with 32 points to his name through an impressive 65% in attack, but he wasn’t enough.

In the semifinals, Halkbank Ankara will face Jastrzębski Węgiel, while Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia will play against the winner of the match between Itas Trentino and Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle, which will be played tomorrow.
