Italy | Quarterfinals Game 2 | Verona and Modena on 2-0 in Series, Monza defeat Trentino and Perugia fall in Milano

4 min read

After exciting Games 1, today’s quarterfinal matches of the Italian SuperLega CredemBanca were exciting and filled with great volleyball and drama, with three matches concluding after intense battles that lasted five sets!

Among them the match in Verona in which the home team took a significant step towards the semifinals by winning 3-2 and leading 2-0 in the best-of-five series. The trio of Keita (20), Mozic (15), and Sapozkhov (27) once again demonstrated their dominance, leading the home team to a really resounding victory against titleholders Cucine Lube Civitanova, while Grozdanov also contributed with 5 winning blocks. Partially it was 24:26, 25:20, 20:25, 25:23 and 15:11.
About Lube, 23 points for Zaytsev and 17 per Yant, but double digit also for Nikolov (13) and Chinenyeze (11). They were more incisive in serving with 7 aces vs. 1, but the winners were better in attack and, above all, in decisive moments of the match.

Vero Volley Monza caused the second major upset of this playoff phase by defeating Trentino 3-1 (25:21, 25:16, 23:25, 25:18) in front of their home fans, thus leveling the series at 1-1. However, the visiting side had to face the heavy absences of Michieletto and Podrascanin, who were both unable to travel due to illness.
In any case, German superstar Georg Grozer showed another outstanding performance with 21 points through a super 68% in attack, earning the title of the match’s top scorer, while Stephen Maar also contributed 19 points and 62%, and Davyskiba with 13 points (including 4 aces) for the winners. On the other side of the net Donovan Dzavoronok (in Monza until the last season, who played today instead of Michieletto) was the most prolific player with 17 points through 53% in attack including 1 ace and 1 block, while Kaziyski added 14 points.

After securing a great victory in a five-set match in Piacenza, 2-3 (25:19, 21:25, 25:22, 21:25, 13:15), Modena has taken a significant step towards the semifinal, and they now await the third game on their home soil in Modena with confidence.
Adis Lagumdzija led the Modena team with 21 points, and Earvin Ngapeth also contributed with 20 points. The top scorer of the match was Leal of Piacenza, who scored 27 points.

This game in Milan was also thrilling and played on a very high level, going to 5 sets. The hosts celebrated a 3-2 (27:25, 25:21, 21:25, 18:25, 15:13) great victory, to level the series to 1-1.
MVP Osniel Mergarejo (42% in attack with 4 blocks) and Yuki Ishikawa (47% in attack) with 22 and 18 points respectively, led Allianz Milano, who wasted a 2-0 lead, to win, but decisive also the entrance of Ebadipour and Vitelli.
Perugia’s most effective player and top scorer of the match was Leon, who scored 29 points (with 7 winning blocks), Rychlicki scored 13 in three sets, Flavio tallied 12 and Plotnytskyi scored 5 aces.
This was the first defeat of Perugia in Superlega, as the guys around head coach Andrea Anastasi ended regular season undefeated!
About the numbers, they are very balanced, just like the game: Perugia was slightly better from the service line with 8 aces against 5, but also with more errors (20 vs. 15). 14 winning blocks each, and similiar performances in reception and attack.
