Champions League: second week continues – all results of Wednesday

5 min read

Second week of 2024/25 CEV Champions League continued today with other 7 games.
In Pool A, another heavy defeat for Greenyard Maaseik, who succumbed at home against Berlin Recycling Volleys, 0-3 (16:25, 20:25, 30:32), mostly thanks to an almost unstoppable Jake Hanes, absolute top scorer of the match with 26 points in just three sets through 65% in attack, 3 blocks and 1 ace. Waiting for the clash between ACH Volley Ljubljana and PGE Projekt Warszawa, the team from Germany’s capital is now alone to the top with 6 points and two victories in as many games played so far.
In Pool B, MINT Vero Volley Monza delivered a dominant performance in Istanbul, sweeping the hosts Fenerbahçe Medicana with a clean 3-0 (25:23, 25:20, 25:23). Monza showcased exceptional composure in decisive moments of the game, again with standout performances from Ibrahim Lawani, MVP for second time in a row in European elite competition with 17 points through 63% in attack and 2 blocks, Ivan Zaytsev, who also contributed with 16, and Erik Röhrs, also in double digit with 13.
Their efficient attack (60%) and control in decisive phases secured their lead in Pool B while Fenerbahçe, despite a strong start, couldn’t contain Monza’s rhythm, leaving the Turkish side, now at 8th place in Efelerligi, to regroup for their next challenge against Olympiacos who today, in Piraeus, claimed a hard-fought 3-1 (25:21, 24:26, 25:16, 26:24) victory over German side Helios Grizzlys Giesen. Led by Gordon Perrin, MVP and top scorer of the match with 20 points, and Alen Pajenk, who added 17 points, the Greek champions rebounded from a narrow second-set loss to dominate the third and edge out a nail-biting fourth one. With this success, Olympiacos now sits second in Pool B and is gearing up for a important showdown with Fenerbahçe next week.
In Pool C, Allianz Milano continued their hot streak, claiming a 1-3 (18:25, 23:25, 25:21, 20:25) victory over Hypo Tirol Innsbruck in Austria during the second round of the CEV Champions League. The Italian side showcased dominance and resilience against a combative opponent, led by Ferre Reggers, who shined with 25 points, including 5 crucial blocks, 58% in attack and 1 ace.
The first set saw Milano capitalizing on the rivals’ errors, pulling away to secure a commanding 25-18 win. Then they maintained composure in a nail-biting second set, edging the Innsbruck side 25-23. Hypo Tirol rallied back in the third set, led by Niklas Kronthaler, to claim a 25-21 victory. However, Milano sealed the match in decisive fourth set, with key plays from Edoardo Caneschi and Ferre Reggers himself closing it 25-20. On the same Pool, tomorrow, Belgium’s Knack Roeselare will welcome Polish powerhouse Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie.
To close the Champions League week in Pool D after the easy win of Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia on the field of Saint Nazaire VB Atlantique, with 25 points from Czech Marek Sotola (4 aces, 1 block and 59% in attack) Turkish campions Halkbank Ankara won in Czech Republic, on the field of Jihostroj České Budějovice by 1-3 (18:25, 25:22, 22:25, 15:25) while, in Pool E, Polish powerhouse Jastrzębski Węgiel continued their perfect run with a commanding 0-3 (23:25, 18:25, 20:25) victory over Chaumont VB 52 in France. Plusliga defending champions showcased their strength led by Tomasz Fornal, crowned MVP with 14 points and a 59% attack efficiency, and Łukasz Kaczmarek, who added 13 points. Chaumont’s Pierre Toledo led all scorers with 17 points, but his efforts weren’t enough to overcome the rivals’ superiority in attack (64% to 46%), blocking (6-3), and serve (4-1).
On the same Pool, Germany’s SVG Lüneburg won at Levski Sofia Sport Hall against the hosts Levski Sofia with the score of 1-3 (28:26, 15:25, 24:26, 21:25), despite 28 points from top scorer Venislav Antov and 11 winning blocks recorded from tue team from Bulgaria’s capital. For the winners, second in Pool E behind Jastrzębski, Xander Ketrzynski scored 24 points through 56% in attack and 2 blocks.
