Italy: The latest from Italy: Coscione, Sanguinetti, Polo, Magliano and Rossini

3 min read

Due to the absence of VolleyBar (plagiarized and rebranded as a “press review” by Italian “journalists” who, apparently, struggle to find news to publish without us), which will return on Monday, here’s a brief overview of the latest transfer activity in the Italian SuperLega.

Veteran setter Manuel Coscione returns to Cuneo 12 years after his last spell with the club, while middle blocker Giovanni Sanguinetti has officially become a new player for champions of everything Perugia.

Over the past few seasons, he played for Modena, where he also won the CEV Cup in the 2023/24 season.
“After my long journey with Modena, the call from Perugia was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up. I grew up as a volleyball player in Modena and I’m grateful for all the opportunities I had there over the years, but having the chance to play for a top club like Sir is an extra motivation and felt like the right step forward for my career,” he said.

“My greatest strength is definitely my attacking game; it’s the skill I express most naturally. But I’m also working hard to improve the areas where I’m less effective.”

Sanguinetti will complete Perugia’s middle blocker unit alongside the established Argentine duo of Sebastian Solé and Agustín Loser, as well as fellow Italian youngster Federico Crosato.

“My teammates in this position are world-class players whom I’ve faced as opponents and from whom I can certainly learn a lot. That will be an extra motivation during training to keep improving. Off the court I’m a bit more reserved, but I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and I hope to build a great relationship with everyone,” he added.

Always about middle blockers, Alberto Polo, arriving from Sonepar Padova, is a new player for Cucine Lube Civitanova.

“I’m happy to return to the Marche region, a place I love and where I know many people, also thanks to my positive experience with Volley Potentino. So the foundations are already there. Wearing the jersey of a prestigious club like Lube is both an honour and a valuable opportunity. After a long spell on the sidelines, having the chance to play for one of the best clubs in the world just over a year after my return is a huge redemption for me. I already know many Lube fans, and I promise to give 100% together with my teammates as we pursue major goals,” he said.

Head coach Giampaolo Medei commented:

“We are adding a complete player who brings significant SuperLega experience. He is the ideal profile because he is an athlete who is always ready when called upon. I know him well and I believe he will make an important contribution to the group in terms of team building as well. I consider him a reference point in many respects. From a technical standpoint, he is also an extremely valuable asset who will help raise the overall level of our game.”

Lorenzo Magliano is the fifth signing of Cisterna Volley.
The Turin-born outside hitter, who turned 21 in April, arrives from Serie A2 side Porto Viro, joining middle blocker Shikun Peng, opposite Miguel Ángel Martínez “Amaranto”, libero Filippo Federici and outside hitter Giulio Magalini among the club’s new additions, alongside confirmed players setter Alessandro Fanizza, middle blockers Daniele Mazzone and Jacopo Tosti, and outside hitter Filippo Lanza.

Finally, libero Salvatore Rossini has announced his retirement from volleyball.
Among the highlights of his career was the historic treble with Modena in the 2015/16 season, when he won the Scudetto, the Italian Cup and the Italian Super Cup, in addition to enjoying a remarkable career with the Italian national team.
