Barkom-Kazhany to Operate Under New PlusLiga Regulations

Barkom-Kazhany Lviv will compete under new regulations in PlusLiga. Starting with the upcoming season, the club will be allowed to sign Polish players, who—alongside Ukrainian players—will be considered domestic athletes. Beginning with the 2028/29 season, Barkom will compete under exactly the same regulations as every other PlusLiga club.
The changes were approved during a meeting of PlusLiga club presidents and are intended to gradually align Barkom with the competition rules that apply to all other teams in the league.
“When we first invited the Lviv team to join PlusLiga, the situation in the world was completely different. There was no war on our eastern border,” said Artur Popko, President of the Polish Volleyball League (PLS). “Given the current circumstances, we felt it was necessary to reassess the situation and take appropriate action. That is why our shareholders decided to give Barkom time to complete this transition. From the 2028/29 season onwards, the club will compete under the same regulations as every other PlusLiga team.”
In practical terms, this means that during the 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons, both Polish and Ukrainian players registered with Barkom will be classified as domestic players and therefore will not count toward the league’s foreign-player limit. Under PlusLiga regulations, every team must have at least three domestic players on the court at all times. In previous seasons, however, every Barkom player except Ukrainian nationals was considered a foreign player for roster purposes.
From the 2028/29 season onwards, Barkom will be subject to the same rules as every other PlusLiga club, meaning Ukrainian players will also count toward the league’s foreign-player limit.
Barkom-Kazhany has competed in PlusLiga since the 2022/23 season, with the upcoming campaign marking its fifth in Poland’s top volleyball league. The club previously hosted its home matches in Kraków, Wieluń and Elbląg, and will now play its home games in Jastrzębie-Zdrój.
