New Tauron Liga continues: Częstochowa stun Resovia in five-set comeback as Bełchatów overcome Gdańsk

After two advances played yesterday, in which GKS Katowice stun defending champions Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie winning the game in just three sets, and the win of PGE Projekt Warszawa over Energa Indykpol AZS Olsztyn (read more here), Round 1 of new 2026/27 Tauron Liga continued today with other two games.
NEONET Norwid Częstochowa produced one of the opening round’s biggest surprises in the Polish men’s championship, coming from two sets behind to defeat Asseco Resovia Rzeszów 3-2 (26:28, 21:25, 25:22, 25:16, 15:13). After losing the first two sets, the hosts gradually took control, using effective serving and blocking to turn the match around in front of their home crowd.
Resovia appeared to be in a strong position after taking the opening sets, but the hosts responded with greater aggression and consistency, levelling the match by winning the fourth set convincingly, 25-16, before holding their nerve in a tense tie-break. Oskar Madsen finished the job, scoring the decisive points to seal the 15-13 victory.
Madsen was named MVP after an outstanding performance, finishing with 26 points to his name through 59% in attack, 1 ace and 1 block.
Jakub Nowak also played an important role for the hosts, particularly at the net scoring as many as 6 of the winners’ 12 winning blocks, while Karol Butryn led Resovia with 25 points. The result gave Norwid an impressive start to the campaign against a Resovia side that finished fourth last season. 
PGE GiEK SKRA Bełchatów also began their campaign with a victory, defeating Energa Trefl Gdańsk 3-1 (25:23, 19:25, 25:18, 31:29).
The match was closely contested, with both teams producing strong spells, but the home team proved more effective in the decisive moments.
After the teams shared the opening two sets, Bełchatów took control in the third before surviving a dramatic fourth set. Gdańsk fought hard to force a decider, but the hosts eventually prevailed 31-29 to secure all three points.
Middle blocker Michał Szalacha was named MVP after scoring 23 points, an impressive total for a player in his position, including 74% in attack, 5 blocks and 4 aces. Antoine Pothron contributed 18 points and Brazilian opposite Alan Souza added 17 for the winners. Aliaksei Nasevich led Gdańsk with 18 points, while Tobias Brand finished with 17. 
The two matches delivered contrasting stories: Częstochowa’s remarkable comeback against one of the league’s established contenders and Bełchatów’s hard-fought home victory after a dramatic finish. Both winners take valuable early momentum into the new PlusLiga season.
Round 1 will continue tomorrow with other two games: ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle will welcome BOGDANKA LUK Lublin, while Ślepsk Malow Suwałki will face Jastrzębie Barkom.
